After two home losses, FC Indiana notches first win on the road

TOLEDO VILLA FC 1, FC INDIANA 2

SYLVANIA, OH - After two home losses to start the season, FC Indiana (1-2 Midwest) would get their first win on the road in a 2-1 win over Toledo Villa FC (1-1-1 Midwest) at Northview High School on Sunday afternoon. It would take the third match of their Midwest campaign for the long-standing organization to get their offense on track and FC Indiana did it quickly in this match. Forward Ashley Johnson scored the first goal of the FCI season in the seventh minute of action off an assist from midfielder Yo Tachibana.

The visitors would continue their early offensive pressure, forcing Toledo goalkeeper Kathleen Duvwe (six saves) into making a pair of stops in the 13th and 21st minutes. Once the Villa Women thought they had a foothold in the match, FC Indiana would than convert on a free kick in the 39th minute as midfielder Jennifer Munoz tucked away forward Gabby Veldman’s effort. Toledo would pull a goal back in the 55th minute when forward Skylar Fleak notched her team-leading fourth goal on a bending strike into the top corner past FCI keeper Andrea Vera. The hosts would push for the equalizer but to no avail.

MICHIGAN LEGENDS FC 2, DETROIT SUN FC 3

BRIGHTON, MI - It turned out to be an exciting Friday evening inside the Legacy Center, as the host Michigan Legends FC (1-2-1 Midwest) almost pulled off an improbable second half comeback against Detroit Sun FC (3-0 Midwest) but fell short in a 3-2 loss. The early-season leaders in the Midwest pulled out to a commanding three-goal lead with thanks to two goals from midfielder Madison Schupbach and the eventual game-winner by forward Isabella Habuda. But MLFC notched two late strikes past Detroit goalkeeper Caitlin Clem (two saves) in their effort to force a positive result.

The Sun attack rose early in this budding in-state rivalry with Schupbach striking a deflected clearance past Legends keeper Victoria Norris - who shared netminding duties with Gabby Gauruder (three total saves) - in the 28th minute. Substitute forward Emma Tokuyama tallied the first of her two assists in the 52nd minute, threading a pass to Schupbach for her team-leading fourth goal. Habuda’s goal in the 59th minute could have been considered icing on the cake but proved to be the game-winner. Melanie Pickert scored her first goal of the season in the 70th minute, and eight minutes later, Holly Hein made it 3-2 but MLFC could not get the draw.

FC INDIANA 0, GRAND RAPIDS FC WOMEN 3

LAKEVILLE, IN - In their third of four consecutive road matches, Grand Rapids FC Women (3-1 Midwest) got their second straight victory in a 3-0 win over FC Indiana at Newton Park on Friday night. The GRFC Women notched their second straight shutout because it took an early stop from goalkeeper Reilley Ott (six saves) - that initially left her shook up - to get her team moving in a winning direction. From there, the visitors would besiege the hosts’ defense, forcing FCI keeper Andrea Vera to make 13 saves in the loss.

Clare Carlson would net the game-winning goal in the 30th minute, as midfielder Annie Steinlage’s shot off a corner kick deflected off of Vera and the defender finished it off on the goal line. As the second half commenced, midfielder Marti Corby began to exert her influence on the game with a fine effort in the 49th minute and than the second GRFC goal in the 53rd minute on a breakaway. Steinlage tallied her second assist (and team-leading fourth assist) in the 68th minute on a cross to forward Brittany Tanner, who finished her shot in the upper right side of the net.
