Eight Teams Open the 2019 UWS Season

UWS Midwest Conference

Lansing United (2) v. Grand Rapids FC (1) - Friday, May 10, 2019

Home side Lansing United (1-0-0) opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 victory against Grand Rapids FC (0-1-0). United’s Aubrey Schierbeek opened her 2019 account in the 22’ with a header off a cross from Kasey Jamieson. Grand Rapids would not take long to respond when captain Marti Corby scored upper 90 on the far post with her left foot from outside the box. Jamieson and Schierbeek would link up again in the 38’. A ball from Alexis Mitchell to Jamieson on the left wing led to a low cross from Jamieson back to the middle which Schierbeek neatly placed into the lower left hand corner of the net. Jamieson leads the league with two assists and keeper Lauren Kozal of Grand Rapids is tied for saves (8).

Detroit Sun FC (4) v. AFC Ann Arbor (2) - Friday, May 10, 2019

Things looked bright for hosts Detroit Sun FC (1-0-0) in their season-opening 4-2 win over newcomers AFC Ann Arbor (0-1-0). Detroit got off to a fast start (5’) with a through ball to Gabriella Mencotti which Mencotti bounced off the far post and into the back of the net. A quarter of an hour later, Mami Yamaguchi scored the first ever goal for AFC Ann Arbor after Devyn Brough found her on a long ball to the wing. Brough was just getting started, scoring from outside the box (and nicking the underside of the crossbar in the process) 41’ into the match to give AFC the lead. Only 4 minutes later, Detroit would respond as Rachel Deluca skipped past the keeper and slid the ball into the net. Taking advantage of a mishit pass, Anastasia Savich scored the winning goal for Detroit 60’ into the game. Darlene Radamaker got the insurance goal in the 71st minute, chipping the keeper from outside the box and hitting side net of the far post.

UWS East Conference

Long Island Rough Riders (1) v. Connecticut Fusion (2) - Saturday, May 11, 2019

CT Fusion (1-0-0) began the 2019 campaign with a 2-1 win, traveling across the Sound to the Long Island Rough Riders (0-1-0). Long Island had the early lead thanks to a goal in the 12th minute for Kimberly Mara. Connecticut's Tori Sousa had the equalizer in the 77th minute & another goal shortly after to seal the deal.

Worcester Smiles (0) v. New England Mutiny (3) - Saturday, May 11, 2019

New England (1-0-0) stays the course with an opening win in Worcester (0-1-0) avenging last season’s early loss. At the 47’ mark, Kate Howarth celebrated her 50th goal off an assist from Roma McLaughlin, adding to Howarth’s stature as the all-time leading scorer for New England. A minute later, Howarth scored #51, assisted by Olivia White. Jessica Fernandes scored from the penalty spot minutes later (53’), putting the game on ice. Worcester keeper Brittany Henderson’s valiant effort (8 saves) has her tied as the UWS Saves Leader.
