McIntosh leads CT defense; Schierbeek impresses as Offensive POTW

METUCHEN, NJ - The 2019 United Women's Soccer (UWS) season kicked off last weekend with games in the East and Midwest Conferences. In the Midwest, both host teams Lansing United & Detroit Sun FC, had victories over their opponents. Meanwhile, in the East, LI Rough Riders & Worcester Smiles faced a different outcome in their home openers. Connecticut Fusion's Kylee McIntosh has been named UWS Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding play to shut down Long Island's dangerous attack, which resulted in a 2-1 victory. Lansing United's Aubrey Schierbeek garners UWS Offensive Player of the Week for coming up big with two goals in their rematch of the 2018 Midwest Conference championship match against Grand Rapids FC.

UWS TEAM OF THE WEEK (WEEK I)

Aubrey Schierbeek (Lansing United) - scored 2 goals in victory over GRFC

Jackie Feraco (Worcester Smiles) - played outstanding defense against NE Mutiny

Kate Howarth (NE Mutiny) - scored 2 goals as all-time leading scorer for the Mutiny with 51 goals

Kimberly Marra (LI Rough Riders) - strong midfielder scoring the lone goal for the Rough Riders

Kylee McIntosh (CT Fusion) - key component in shutting down LI Rough Riders' attack

Lauren Bos (Detroit Sun) - instrumental in holding AFCAA scoreless in second half

Madison Clem (Lansing United) - solid saves in net to keep Lansing in the lead over GRFC

Mami Yamaguchi (AFC Ann Arbor) - very skillful in midfield, scoring first ever goal for the Ann Arbor women's team

Rachel DeLuca (Detroit Sun) - 1 goal & 1 assist in Detroit Sun’s victory over AFCAA

Shauny Alterisio (NE Mutiny) - outstanding defensive play in match against Worcester

Tori Sousa (CT Fusion) - scored both goals in victory over Long Island
