Syracuse DA notched their second straight home win via shutout as the first-year side defeated New Jersey Copa FC by a 2-0 score. Brooke Barbuto's fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute proved to be the eventual game winner for Syracuse (2-1-1). Barbuto collected a loose ball in the middle of the penalty area and was left unmarked by the New Jersey (1-4-0) defense to cooly slot home her shot past goalkeeper Andrea Leitner (five saves). Four minutes later, Mariah Williams' first goal for SDA was the insurance tally for the home side as the University at Albany star beat Leitner on a 1v1 opportunity. Binghamton University goalkeeper Mackenzie Hanna made two saves in goal and hasn't allowed a goal in consecutive wins.

New England Mutiny forward Kate Howarth scored the eventual game-winner in the 26th minute off a header on a corner kick from Brooke Murphy in a 5-0 home victory over the Worcester Smiles. Howarth's seventh goal of the season was the only tally for the better part of 60 minutes as New England (3-0-1) found it difficult to break down the visitor's disciplined defense. The Mutiny scored four goals in the last 28 minutes of the match. Worcester (0-6-0) goalkeeper Brittany Henderson stood tall for her team and made 11 saves. Local star Hope Santaniello came on as a second half substitute and scored two goals to insure the win. Zoe Steck (62nd minute) and Shauny Alterisio (65th minute) completed the scoring for the hosts. Santaniello's first goal came in the 75th minute after Murphy slotted her a through ball and she rocketed the shot past Henderson. UConn keeper Kelsey Kohler (four saves) picked up her second win of the season.

The Connecticut Fusion scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute in a 2-2 road draw against the Rochester Lancers to remain undefeated on the season. Rochester (1-2-2) almost registered the victory as the tactical changes that Head Coach Sal Galvano implemented frustrated Connecticut (3-0-2) for much of the game. The Fusion took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on Brenna Brown's header from the middle of the penalty area off a cross from the left flank by Tori Sousa. The Lancers tied the game at 1-1 in the 42nd minute as Elysia Masters sent a 25-yard rocket past Connecticut goalkeeper Alessandra Augur (seven saves). The hosts took the lead in the 66th minute on Taylor Wingerden's shot into the upper left corner from 12 yards out. Rochester were on the cusp of the upset but the visitors tied the score on a goal by second-half substitute Julie Lavoie. Lancers Kenna Kosinski keeper made nine saves in goal.

Grand Rapids FC opened the scoring against Lansing United but allowed two second half goals in a 2-1 loss at home. The GRFC (1-3-1) attack came storming out of the gates. The defending Midwest champions broke through in the 33rd minute on Riko Sagara's second goal of the season. Brittany Tanner headed the ball back into the center of the penalty area off a cross from the right flank and Sagara than nodded the ball inside the far post. Lansing (5-0-0) responded early in the second half as captain Dani Stephan collected a pass from Alexis Mitchell and fired a left-footed shot inside the near upper 90 from the top of the box. The visitors shocked the home crowd with the game winner in the 90th minute. GRFC could not clear the ball after a corner kick and second half substitute Kaley Buck deftly one-timed her shot past goalkeeper Jordanne Ellingboe (six saves). Madison Clem was strong in goal for United, making seven saves.

Michigan Legends - 1
Indiana Union - 3

The Indiana Union continue to roll on since their rebranding, as they scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 win over the Michigan Legends in the first game of a weekend road trip. Powered by two first half goals from the reigning Big East Midfielder of the Year Samantha Dewey, Indiana (3-1-1) held out Michigan (2-4-0) until Erin McDonald's goal in the 75th minute. Dewey converted on the first of two consecutive, unassisted set piece goals in the 7th minute of the match. The Xavier University star worked her magic over the ball again in the 34th minute. The score remained at 2-0 going into halftime. Eleven minutes into the second half, Delaney Benich served in a cross from the end line and Molly McLaughlin finished her shot past Legends goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve (one save). McDonald headed in Abby Gardiner's corner kick for Michigan and the 3-1 score. Olivia Jenkins made three saves in goal for the Union.

AFC Ann Arbor - 1
Indiana Union - 5

In the second game of their weekend road trip, Indiana Union fell behind early against AFC Ann Arbor but responded ruthlessly with five unanswered goals in a 5-1 win for their third straight victory. Rachel Sweigard opened the scoring for Ann Arbor (1-5-0) in the 11th minute but Indiana (4-1-1) bounced right back and proceeded to tally four first half goals - including three goals in the span of five minutes. In the 18th minute, Samantha Dewey tied the match at 1-1 before Laura Ronnfeldt converted on a cross from Allison Whitfield to put the visitors ahead by a 2-1 score in the 22nd minute. Dewey scored her second of the game and seventh of the season (tied for the league lead) in the 23rd minute. Delaney Benich's goal in the 42nd minute made it a 4-1 score going into halftime. Whitfield finished the scoring in the 65th minute. Indiana goalkeeper Olivia Jenkins made seven saves while Victoria Norris (one save) took the loss for the hosts.

Grand Rapids FC - 5
Detroit Sun - 3

Powered by five different goal scorers, Grands Rapids FC topped the Detroit Sun by a 5-3 score in a original rivalry game in the UWS Midwest. GRFC (2-3-1) bounced back from a tight 2-1 loss on the night before to conference leader Lansing while for the second straight weekend, Detroit (2-3-0) could not take advantage of a team playing their second game in as many days. Both sides exchanged goals in the first half. The Sun opening the scoring in the 13th minute on a Rachel Deluca goal. Fifteen minutes later, Riko Sagara tied the match at 1-1 on a penalty kick. After assisting on Detroit's first goal, Gabriella Mencotti put the visitors ahead in the 31st minute. Kendra Longoria tied the match at 2-2 right before halftime on an assist from Riley Tanner. The second half was as wild as the first half. GRFC captain Marti Corby put the hosts up 3-2 in the 51st minute but only two minutes later, Mencotti tied the score on a penalty kick. In the 57th minute, Corby assisted on the game winner by Brittney Tanner. Grace Labadie netted the insurance goal on an unassisted strike in the 67th minute.

Lansing United exploded for three goals in a three minute span in the first half but held on late for a 3-2 win over AFC Ann Arbor. Lansing (6-0-0) were led by the first two goals of the season for GVSU forward Timia Robinson. Dani Stephan opened the scoring in the 31st minute as she skillfully one-timed Alexis Mitchell's free kick past Ann Arbor (1-6-0) goalkeeper Sofia Sweier (three saves). United immediately scored again as Robinson tapped in a cross from the right flank by Kaley Buck. In the 34th minute, Stephan sent in a through ball for Robinson and she beat Sweier to the ball before the two collided. Robinson chipped it over the keeper for the 3-0 lead. The home side were on cruise control until the 70th minute, when Ann Arbor's Tatiana Mason scored her first goal of the season to cut Lansing's lead to 3-1. In the 90th minute, Rachel Sweigard notched her team-leading fifth goal for AFC but the visitors could not complete the late comeback bid.

UWS SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

Saturday, June 8

Houston Aces - 6
El Paso Surf - 0

Defending UWS champion Houston Aces scored two goals in the first twelve minutes and did not look back in a 6-0 home win over the El Paso Surf. Houston (4-0-0) leads the UWS Southwest with two games remaining in the regular season and are favorites to repeat as conference champions. The Aces will have to lose out to surrender their advantage and don't look like they are in the mood to do so. Lauren Hughes tallied four goals against El Paso (0-2-0) - including strikes in the 7th and 12th minutes - and now leads the team in goals scored (7). Houston went into halftime with a 3-0 lead on Tatiana Ariza's fifth goal of the season in the 37th minute. Paige Hayward put the hosts up 4-0 in the 65th minute on an assist from Hughes. The former Rice University star scored the final two goals of the match in the 75th and 77th minutes. Surf goalkeeper Jennifer Solis made nine saves for the visitors while Alexis Espino and Gabriela Lopez shared the shutout (one save).

San Antonio Athenians - 3
FC Austin Elite - 2

Familiar foes - the San Antonio Athenians and FC Austin Elite - wrote a new chapter in their budding Texas rivalry. In front of a home crowd of 1,000-plus, San Antonio (1-1-0) gave up the first goal of the match but went on to the 3-2 win. Christina Arteaga capitalized on a turnover to give FC Austin (0-2-0) the 1-0 lead in first half injury time. The Athenians came out with an attacking strategy in the second half. Just three minutes after her substitution, Allison Fahey split a defender and than goalkeeper Liz-Amanda Brown (five saves) to hit the equalizer in the 58th minute. Five minutes later, the hosts kept up the pressure and Brooke Hanson found Megan Wilcox, who executed a smooth first touch followed by a shot that for the 2-1 advantage. In the 90th minute, Arteaga sent a shot left of the goalkeeper that hit the post and went to Kimberlin Palacios for the easy tap in to tie the match. Hanson tallied her second assist on the game winner, feeding Fahey who scored the game winner with the last touch of the match.

UWS WEST CONFERENCE

Colorado Pride - 0
LA Galaxy OC - 4

LA Galaxy OC swept the season series with the Colorado Pride, winning by a 4-0 score in the second of back-to-back games between the two teams. LA Galaxy (3-0-0) now top the UWS West as this was the only conference game of the weekend. Colorado (0-4-0) have not been able to get their offense on track this season and have only scored two goals in four games while their normally staunch defense was eclipsed in this match. Sonest Furtado opened the scoring in the first minute of play for the eventual game winner and assisted on Millene Cabral's goal in the 28th minute. The former University of Hawai'i star tallied her second of the game in the 62nd minute and Jordan Marada concluded the scoring in the 83rd minute on an assist by Madison Louderback. Afton Schrami made seven saves for the Pride while Hillary Beall made two saves in goal for the visitors.
