Box Score | MyCujoo

Connecticut Fusion midfielder Chanel Johnson tallied the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to give the home side a 2-1 victory over Syracuse DA. The result lifted Connecticut (4-0-2) temporarily into first place in the East Conference of United Women's Soccer (UWS) while Syracuse (2-2-1) remained in fourth place before the kickoff of Saturday's games. The Fusion generated the first scoring chance in the 14th minute as SDA's goalkeeper Mackenzie Hanna (five saves) tipped Maegen Doyle's free kick over the cross bar. 2018 UWS MVP Brooke Barbuto led the Syracuse offense and after Doyle's chance, Barbuto came close to scoring twice shortly after. The Fusion went ahead in the 19th minute as Tori Sousa sent Lily Fabian in on goal with a well-weighted through ball. Fabian was able to outfox the on-rushing Hanna and finished her effort inside the near post. Barbuto got Syracuse back on level terms less than five minutes later. She received Darby D'Angelo's cross-field pass and rifled her shot into the top corner Fusion keeper Allie Augur (five saves). The Fusion notched the game winner in the 79th minute when midfielder Sierra Stone cushioned a failed defensive clearance and found Johnson. She drove her effort just inside the far post to the delight of the home supporters.

LI Rough Riders - 0

Box Score | MyCujoo

The Lancaster Inferno took the pitch for the first time in two weeks and did not skip a beat against the Long Island Rough Riders. Lancaster (3-1-0) were business-like against third-place Long Island (4-3-0) and controlled possession in a 2-0 victory which was good enough for their third straight win. The result vaulted the Inferno into fourth place in the UWS East past Syracuse DA and into playoff contention. The hosts opened the scoring in the 25th minute as Teresa Rook fed a through ball behind the Rough Riders defense to Haley Crawford. The James Madison University star beat goalkeeper Shannon Gray (four saves) for her team-leading third goal. The score stayed that way until the 89th minute when Rook sealed the win with her first goal of the season. She won the ball from a pair of defenders, bullied her way through them and chipped the ball past Gray for the insurance goal. Kelly O'Brien made six saves for the hosts including a huge stop late in the second half.

New England Mutiny - 5
Syracuse DA - 0

Lusitano Stadium
Box Score | MyCujoo

The New England Mutiny scored four unanswered goals in the first half and did not look back in a 5-0 victory over Syracuse DA. It was the second game in as many days for SDA (2-3-1) and the New England (5-0-1) offense took advantage and was ruthless from the start. The victory moved the Mutiny into first-place in the UWS East. Team captain Kate Howarth tallied the game winning goal in the 10th minute on an assist from Zoe Steck. The UConn forward intercepted a pass and Howarth dribbled in on goal and fired her shot over Syracuse goalkeeper Mackenzie Hanna (eight saves). Eight minutes later, Steck completed a nice passing exchange that began in the New England penalty and ended with her finishing inside the far post on a nice through ball by Breukelen Woodard. Howarth tallied her league-leading 10th goal in the 36th minute when she collected a missed pass and finished low underneath Hanna for the 3-0 lead. Jessica Fernandes finished the first half scoring just before halftime. Howarth broke in on the left flank and when her shot was saved, Fernandes finished the rebound into an open net. Steck notched her second assist of the match in the 53rd minute on Roma McLaughlin's first goal of the year.

UWS MIDWEST CONFERENCE

Sunday, June 16

Lansing United - 4
Detroit Sun - 0

East Lansing Soccer Complex
Box Score | MyCujoo

It was a cloudy and chilly afternoon at the East Lansing Soccer Complex, but it did not dampen the spirits for the fathers of Lansing United players who were in attendance. Lansing (7-0-0) continued their undefeated start to the season in a dominating 4-0 win over the Detroit Sun. With the victory, United stays in first-lace while Detroit (2-4-0) drops back into a fourth-place tie with the Michigan Legends, who were not in action this past weekend. The hosts came out on fire in the first half and tallied the eventual game winner in the third minute, as the Sun tried to clear the play from a corner kick, but ended up scrambling as Anna Stinson's first goal of the season gave the hosts the lead. Kaley Buck crossed a pass to Kasey Jamieson who beautifully headed the ball in to put United up 2-0 in the 11th minute. Seventeen minutes later, United was on the break as Alexis Mitchell gave a soft touch pass to Buck and placed a perfect ball to the lower right part of the goal. In the 35th minute, Stinson was alone near the box as she took a touch from Jamieson to set up the play which forced Detroit goalkeeper Katelyn McEachern (seven saves) to come out and allowed the shot to go up the middle for her second goal of the day. Madison Clem got the win in goal and was substituted out for Grace Kraft in the second half.

San Antonio Athenians - 4

Americas High School
Box Score | MyCujoo

The San Antonio Athenians made the business trip to face the El Paso Surf and came back with a 4-0 victory for their second consecutive win. Unlike their previous two matches, the San Antonio (2-1-0) offense ran smoothly from the outset against El Paso (0-3-0). Athenians forward Briana Woodall scored the eventual game winner in the 16th minute, firing a free kick over Surf goalkeeper Savannah Hernandez for the 1-0 lead. The visitors kept the hosts on their heels and scored another goal in the 34th minute when Megan Wilcox fired a cross at a sprinting Woodall, who scored her second goal of the match. In the 49th minute, Wilcox delivered a pass to Carlota Suarez Crespo who split the defense and punched a shot left of the keeper to give the Athenians a 3-0 lead. San Antonio finished the scoring in the 73rd minute when Ashton Foytik eluded a defender and found July Cardenas in the box for the 4-0 score. FC Austin Elite - 1
Houston Aces - 5

Elite Field (Round Rock)
Box Score | MyCujoo

The Houston Aces took one more step to clinching the regular season title in the UWS Southwest after a dominating 5-1 road win over FC Austin Elite. In the previous match between the two teams, FC Austin (0-3-0) held the potent Houston (5-0-0) offense to only one goal but the defending UWS champions were not to be denied in this game. Stephanie Garcia opened the scoring after a deft display of skill, dribbling through the Elite defense and firing her shot inside the right upper 90 past goalkeeper Liz-Amanda Brown. Paige Hayward broke up a pass and fed Tatiana Ariza in on goal who finished over Brown for the 2-0 lead. Ariza tallied her second goal of the match in the second half after a failed clearance from a corner kick. She beat Brown to the ball and her flick-on header put the visitors up 3-0. Hanna Rozzi scored the first goal on the Aces this season on a back post header on a corner kick for the 3-1 score. Jennifer LaPonte and Joannie Ramos completed the scoring for Houston.

Calgary v Santa Clarita

UWS WEST CONFERENCE

Friday, June 14

Calgary Foothills - 1
Santa Clarita Blue Heat - 0

Mount Royal University
Box Score | MyCujoo

Tanya Boychuk tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season for Calgary Foothills WFC in the 21st minute against the Santa Clarita Blue Heat and it stood up for the rest of the match in a 1-0 win. That lone tally was all the home side needed in a strong performance against a high quality opponent in UWS West action. Boychuk's goal developed from a short corner kick and continued pressure and possession. A strong start for Calgary (3-0-0) evolved into a much tougher second half but the hosts did keep the Santa Clarita (2-2-0) attack from mounting any sustained pressure. Foothills was bolstered in this match by the return of Alex Lamontagne and Mya Jones from last season's conference winning squad. Both were comfortable and busy in possession in their first match of the 2019 season. Goalkeeper Emily Burns (two saves) earned the shutout while Brooke Littman made eight saves for the visitors.

LA Galaxy OC - 1

Jordan O'Brien touched the ball ahead for Cabral who ran straight at the back-pedaling United defense and after a deft cut inside the penalty area, blasted a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Kylie Bolton (eight saves). It was her team-leading third goal of the season. Hillary Beall made two saves in the win.

Calgary Foothills - 1
LA Galaxy OC - 0

Mount Royal University
Box Score | MyCujoo

Calgary Foothills WFC completed an impressive weekend sweep against two of the top teams from California via a 1-0 win over LA Galaxy OC on Sunday afternoon. It was the second straight victory via shutout for Calgary (4-0-0) who are now tied with LA (4-1-0) for the top spot in the UWS West. In the 27th minute, Caleigh Boeckx found the far top corner behind LA goalkeeper Hillary Beall (five saves) for the only goal of the match. The goal came from a throw in on the opposite side of the field and a pass under pressure from Alex Lamontagne to a brilliant side foot tap from Tanya Boychuk directly to the foot of Boeckx. Defensive discipline was the key for Calgary in both wins and in this match, a lot of battles were won on the right side by 2018 All-UWS Second Team selection Grace Stordy and emergency call up Shalla Kadima. Emily Burns (11 saves) earned her third clean sheet of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.25.
