Box Score | MyCujoo

In the rubber match of the Upstate Derby, Syracuse DA took the title with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Rochester Lancers. In their respective season opener, Syracuse (3-3-1) and Rochester (1-3-2) battled it out to a 1-1 draw. With the win, SDA not only topped the third-year Lancers in their inaugural season but have crawled back into the playoff hunt in the East Conference of United Women's Soccer (UWS). The hosts scored two first half goals via Hailey Bicknell and Brooke Barbuto and held on in the second half as Rochester halved the deficit in the 75th minute. Bicknell opened the scoring in the 28th minute and Barbuto followed up with her team-leading sixth goal of the season just two minutes later. Syracuse held that 2-0 advantage for the next 45 minutes before Taylor Wingerden put the Lancers on the score board via a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Hanna (eight saves) and the SDA defense held on the rest of the way and captured the vital three points. Caitie Broderick made three saves in goal for Rochester.

Connecticut Fusion - 6
Worcester Smiles - 0

Farmington Sports Arena
Box Score | MyCujoo

Led by a two-goal, two-assist performance from forward Tori Sousa, the Connecticut Fusion continued their unbeaten run in 2019 with a 6-0 victory over the Worcester Smiles. Connecticut (5-0-2) saw seven different players register a goal or an assist against Worcester (0-8-0) and are now tied in first-place in the UWS East. The six-goal output set a new franchise single-game record for goals scored in a match and also broke the record for largest margin of victory. In addition to Sousa's effort, Maegen Doyle and Chanel Johnson each chipped in with a goal and an assist. The hosts finally were able to solve Worcester's offside trap in the 21st minute as Johnson clipped a ball over the top to Vivian Beil who slotted it past Worcester goalkeeper Brittany Henderson (seven saves). In the 37th minute, the Fusion capitalized on their seventh corner kick of the game as Sousa curled an in-swinging ball to Kylee McIntosh on top of the six-yard box, who bulleted home a side-footed volley for her first goal of the season. The duo of Naya Lipkens and Randi Palacios (two combined saves) combined for the shutout in goal.

Lancaster Inferno - 2
New Jersey Copa FC - 1

Millersville University
Box Score | MyCujoo

The Lancaster Inferno notched their fifth win in a row in their third game in seven days after a 2-1 home win over New Jersey Copa FC. With the victory, Lancaster (5-1-0) vaults the Long Island Rough Riders (4-4-0) into third-place in the UWS East, who were inactive this past weekend. The Inferno are only two points behind the conference leaders, Connecticut and the New England Mutiny. Lancaster will travel north to face New England this upcoming weekend and will host the rematch on July 6th. Haley Crawford opened the scoring for the hosts on a free kick by Teresa Rook. It was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. New Jersey (1-6-0) responded in the 34th minute on a goal from Tori Baliatico after a counter attack to tie the game at 1-1. It was only the second goal that Inferno keeper Kelly O'Brien (one save) has allowed this season (527 total minutes). Two second half substitutes combined together to tally the game winning goal in the 65th minute. Maura Holst converted on a Kara Weller cross for the 2-1 lead. Andrea Leitner (four saves) and Bristol Pizzuto (three saves) split duties in goal for Copa.

Syracuse DA - 1
New England Mutiny - 1

Solvay High School Stadium
Box Score | MyCujoo

Syracuse DA capped off a successful weekend at home with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw against the New England Mutiny. The draw keeps Syracuse (3-3-2) in the East playoff race, as they now sit only one point behind the Long Island Rough Riders who reside in fourth-place with 12 points. While the draw maintains the undefeated start to the 2019 season for New England (5-0-2), a win would've kept the Mutiny ahead of the Connecticut Fusion in the UWS East standings. The two sides are now tied at the top of the conference in first-place. New England started strong and opened the scoring in the 27th minute on Kate Howarth's team-leading tenth goal of the season. After a throw-in on the right flank deep in SDA territory, Zoe Steck knocked the ball back to Howarth. The team captain dribbled to her left and fired a left-footed shot over Syracuse goalkeeper Mackenzie Hanna (six saves) and inside the far post. The hosts tied the score in the 55th minute on a free kick. Brooke Barbuto tapped the ball to her right to Taylor Bennett and her long-range shot weaved through the crowd and inside the far post. Mutiny keeper Kelsey Kohler made three saves in the draw.

Box Score | MyCujoo

The Rochester Lancers bounced back from a tough loss to upstate rival Syracuse and put up their highest single-game goal total in 2019 via a 7-1 win over the visiting Worcester Smiles. Taylor Wingerden was the No. 1 star for Rochester (2-3-2) as she tallied a goal and an assist against Worcester (0-8-0) while Francesca Lee followed up with her first two goals of the season. The Lancers opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Wingerden got behind the Smiles defense and broke in on goal. Goalkeeper Lauren Keating (10 saves) ran out to stop her but Wingerden tapped the ball to an open Dori Rizzo and she hammered home her shot for the 1-0 lead. The former University of Texas at San Antonio star tallied the eventual game winning goal in the 37th minute. A Worcester defender had a loose touch on the ball near the right flank and she intercepted it and dribbled in on goal. A curling shot around Keating and inside the far post made the score 2-0. Rochester scored three more goals before the Smiles tallied their first goal of the season in the 57th minute on a penalty kick by Ashton Ariola. Kenna Kosinski did not make a save in goal for the home side.

AFC Ann Arbor vs. Detroit

UWS MIDWEST CONFERENCE

Saturday, June 22

AFC Ann Arbor - 1
Detroit Sun - 0

Concordia University Ann Arbor
Box Score | MyCujoo

In their season finale of their inaugural season, AFC Ann Arbor registered their biggest win of 2019 in a 1-0 shutout over the Detroit Sun. AFC's first clean sheet victory of the season was fronted by goalkeeper Victoria Norris (seven saves) and finished by Suzuho Yamasaki, who tallied the game winning goal and was named the Audi of Ann Arbor Woman of the Match. The result also keeps Ann Arbor (2-6-0) mathematically in the race for the UWS Midwest playoffs, as the top four teams qualify and they are only two points behind Grands Rapids FC and Michigan Legends - who are in a battle for third-place. Detroit (2-5-0) dropped their fourth straight loss before Sunday's home game with the Indiana Union and have fallen back towards the bottom. The Mighty Oak dominated most of the first half, led by former Detroit forward Devyn Brough. The best opportunity of the half came in the 43rd minute but Brough could not test Sun keeper Katelyn McEachern (10 saves). AFCAA got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute with thanks to Yamasaki. A mistake from a Sun midfielder was well detected by Yamasaki and she intercepted the ball, dribbled about 15 yards towards goal and finished with her right foot.

UWS SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

San Antonio Athenians - 2
El Paso Surf - 1

Cibolo Multi-Event Center
Box Score | MyCujoo

After an opening week loss to the Houston Aces, the San Antonio Athenians pushed their winning streak to three games in the UWS Southwest after an exciting 2-1 win over the El Paso Surf. San Antonio (3-1-0) left it until late to tally the win, as forward Briana Woodall scored the game winning goal in the 90th minute and was named Athenians Woman of the Match for the second match in a row. The host beat El Paso (0-4-0) last week by a 4-0 score but they were not going to get the same result. The Surf came out on the attack and tested the San Antonio defense early. However, it was the Athenians who scored first. Brooke Hanson found July Cardenas in the 14th minute and she ripped a shot that appeared to be saved, but the ball was slightly mishandled by El Paso goalkeeper Megan Smith (eight saves) and trickled over the line for the 1-0 lead. El Paso notched their first goal of the season in the 48th minute when Aylin Villalobos sent a shot past Athenians keeper Tara Lujan (three saves). Just like their last home match, the winning goal for San Antonio came in second half stoppage time. From approximately 30 yards out, Woodall sent a looping free kick over Smith to steal the all three points.

Eleven minutes later, Jayme Woodfill converted on a corner kick by Marley Zochert. Woodfill assisted on Christine Arteaga's goal in the 36th minute after a failed corner kick clearance and Zochert's goal in first half injury time. In their first matchup of the 2019 season, Calgary Foothills WFC solidified their spot at the top of the UWS West standings with a 2-0 road win against the Colorado Pride. The two teams will face off on the final day of the West regular season on July 7th. Even though this was the first game in two weeks for Colorado (0-5-0), the Pride defense came out strong and held the heralded Calgary (5-0-0) offense out until the 37th minute. Alex Lamontagne has been a strong presence since her return to the Foothills side two weeks ago and tallied her first goal of the season. The Canadian international converted on her 1v1 opportunity against goalkeeper Afton Schrami for the eventual game winning goal. In first half injury time, Tanya Boychuk notched her team-leading seventh goal of 2019 via a penalty kick. Master's University
Box Score | MyCujoo

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat were led by Tara McKeown and her two-goal, assist performance as they injected themselves back into the UWS West race with a 4-0 win over visiting Queen City United. With the victory, Santa Clarita (4-2-0) kept up the pressure on Calgary and LA Galaxy OC - who both share first-place in the conference. McKeown opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Toraya found her making a run down the opposite flank. The USC star burst in from the right and fired her shot over Queen City goalkeeper Kylie Bolton (six saves) and inside the far post for the eventual game winner. Chloe Castaneda's pressure on the ball forced a United (0-5-0) own goal just five minutes later and than Toraya & McKeown teamed up again in first half injury time. Toraya saw McKeown make a deep run from midfield and fed her in on goal. A cool finish gave the home side a 3-0 lead at halftime. The pair turned the tables a few minutes after halftime as McKeown assisted on the veteran defender's first goal of the season. Lauren Brzykcy made three saves in the shutout for the hosts.

Box Score | MyCujoo

Millene Cabral kept up her strong form for LA Galaxy OC, scoring two goals in a 3-0 win over Queen City United. The former University of Hawai'i star now leads LA (5-1-0) in goals scored (five). In the 39th minute, Cabral picked up the ball on the right flank and proceeded to dribble at the Queen City (0-6-0) defense. The visitors did not have an answer as Cabral cut and weaved through them. Her right-footed blast flew over United goalkeeper Kylie Bolton (16 saves) and underneath the cross bar for the eventual game winner. The hosts picked up an insurance goal in the 53rd minute on a Sonest Furtado tally. Abi Kim broke down the right flank and dribbled along the end line. Her cross found Furtado in the center of the penalty area and she one-timed her left-footed shot past Bolton. Cabral missed a penalty kick during second half action but notched her second goal as time winded down on the clock. Gathering the ball at the top of the box, Cabral put on another dribbling clinic and her shot from the right side tucked inside the far post. Hillary Beall made three saves in goal and picked up the win for the home side.
