College Update: Conference Play Kicks Off

Macario leads Stanford into Pac-12 slate; Memphis duo lights up AAC opener

METUCHEN, NJ - We have reached Week Six (otherwise known as the halfway point) of the college competitive season and teams are starting to face conference opposition. In the highly-competitive Pac-12, 2019 United Women's Soccer (UWS) National Tournament MVP and Stanford star Catarina Macario (LA Galaxy OC) was named the Offensive Player of the Week. The junior forward scored two goals and an assist to help No. 2-nationally ranked Stanford defeat No. 3 USC by a 3-2 score to start Pac-12 play. The reigning Hermann Trophy winner leads the country in game-winning goals (5), goals per game (1.33), points (31) and points per game (3.44). University of Colorado goalkeeper and UWS alum Jalen Tompkins (Colorado Storm) was named the Defensive Player of the Week as the No. 24 Buffs opened their conference slate with a 2-1 overtime win over the University of Arizona.

In the Atlantic Coast Conference, 2017 UWS Offensive Player of the Year and Florida State University midfielder Deyna Castellanos (Santa Clarita Blue Heat) was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week. The Venezuelan superstar recorded two goals and an assist over the weekend, as No. 6 FSU notched road wins at No. 9 Clemson and Syracuse. The University of Memphis pushed their winning streak to eight matches with thanks to midfielders Claire Abrey (Queen City United) and Mya Jones (Calgary Foothills Women's FC). Abrey led the No. 11 Tigers attack with a pair of goals in a 2-1 win over No. 16 South Florida and was named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Jones picked up her third AAC Rookie of the Week honor this season.

In the America East Conference, University of Hartford midfielder Sierra Stone (Connecticut Fusion) was honored as the Co-Offensive Player of the Week. The local star scored the game-winning goal and tallied an assist in the Hawks' 2-1 overtime win at UMass Lowell. She received her first career weekly AEC honor for her clutch play. After being recognized as a Top Performer by the Mid-American Conference last week, goalkeeper Zoie Reed (Lansing United) stepped it up a notch and was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for the University of Central Michigan. Reed recorded two clean sheets against Ball State and Miami (Ohio) as the Chippewas opened conference play with two wins.

University of Buffalo midfielder Kara Daly (WNY Flash) and Western Michigan University forward Morgan Otteson (Grand Rapids FC Women) were honored as Top Performers by the MAC as well. Daly scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 road victory over the University of Toledo. Otteson helped the Broncos get off to an unbeaten start in MAC play - a 3-3 draw against Kent State University and a 1-0 win over Ohio University - with three goals over the weekend. In the Ivy League, Harvard goalkeeper Kat Hess (LA Galaxy OC) made the weekly Honor Roll for her play in a 1-0 shutout win over Penn.
