College Update: ACC Calls On Castellanos

Plus 19 more UWS alumnae receive All-Conference honors for Fall 2019

METUCHEN, NJ - As the NCAA Division I women's soccer world awaits today's announcement of the 2019 championship bracket, we continue our recaps of the postseason award season. More United Women's Soccer (UWS) alumnae were honored by their respective conferences for their outstanding play during the fall competitive calendar. Leading the docket is Florida State University forward Deyna Castellanos - the 2017 UWS Offensive Player of the Year for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat - who was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year. The First Team All-ACC selection led the Seminoles in goals (11) and assists (9), ranking among the top of the conference and nation in both categories.

The Venezuelan international led Santa Clarita in scoring (five goals, assist) in 2017 which included four game-winning goals and was named to the UWS Team of the Week on four occasions. Castellanos also notched four game-winning goals during this fall season to lift the Seminoles to the second seed in the ACC Championship and an appearance in the semifinals. Florida State's freshman forward Jenna Nighswonger made the All-Freshman Team after helping LA Galaxy OC hoist the UWS Championship trophy this past summer. Nighswonger had a fantastic campaign, finishing second behind Castellanos on the team in points scored (five goals, five assists, 15 points).

Another LA Galaxy OC alum received All-Conference recognition, this time it was for Cal State Fullerton midfielder Atlanta Primus. The Big West selected her as the Midfielder of the Year, after ranking second in the conference in goals (10), first in assists (12), second in points (32) and tied for fifth with two game-winning goals. The senior from London, England scored or assisted in 14 of 18 CSF matches this season and her twenty-three career assists is the most in school history. Primus is the fifth Titan to be named Midfielder of the Year.

In the Colonial Athletic Association, Lancaster Inferno star Haley Crawford was named to All-CAA Second Team for James Madison University alongside University of Delaware midfielder Jessica Kennett (New York Surf). Crawford is Lancaster's all-time leading scorer in UWS play (29g, 4a, 62pts in three seasons). 2017 UWS Midwest Conference honoree Hannah Tillett (Indiana Union) was selected to the All-Conference USA First Team for Middle Tennessee State University. Two UWS alumnae were lauded by the Horizon League. University of Milwaukee's Rachel Phillpotts (Michigan Legends) made the First Team and Oakland University's Alexa Sabbagh (Detroit Sun) was named to the Second Team.

The Mid-American Conference honored seven UWS alumnae, including four from Grand Rapids FC. Western Michigan University forward Morgan Otteson was on the All-MAC First Team while fellow Girls In Blue midfielder Bailey Korhorn (WMU) made the All-MAC Second Team alongside defender Savannah Bosworth (WMU). University of Toledo's Stephanie Currie was selected to the All-Freshman Team as the fourth GRFC Women alum. Ball State University forward Sam Kambol (FC Indiana), University at Buffalo midfielder Marcy Barberic (Western New York Flash) and Bowling Green goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve (Michigan Legends FC) were also on the All-MAC Second Team. Buffalo's Leah Wengender (Rochester Lancers) joined Currie on the All-Freshman Team.

In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Iona College midfielder Amber Crispin (TSF Academy) received All-MAAC First Team honors and Marist College midfielder Nicole Sasso (New Jersey Copa FC) was on the Second Team. University of Evansville midfielder Kristen Harvey (Fort Wayne Gryphons) made the Missouri Valley Conference All-Rookie Team. Wrapping up our second recap of the 2019 conference awards in the DI women's soccer ranks is the Mountain West Conference. Colorado State University midfielder Caeley Lordemann (Colorado Storm) was named to the First Team and Utah State University midfielder Amber Marshall (RSL Women) was on the Second Team.
