TSF & Long Island win at home; Copa caps regular season

TSF ACADEMY VALKYRIES 1, LANCASTER INFERNO 0

WAYNE, NJ - The TSF Academy Valkyries hosted the Lancaster Inferno in the second match of their three-game homestead at DePaul Catholic High School on Sunday afternoon. The Valkyries (3-3-2) must really like their home cooking this year, as they won their third home match of 2016 - counting for all their victories. The hosts netted a first half goal and held on the rest of the way, defeating the Inferno (4-5) by a 1-0 score.

TSF got the eventual game-winning goal in the 23rd minute when midfielder Jen Andresen scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Gladys Loyas. After that, the offensive attacks from both teams appeared to cancel each other out, as the Valkyries out-shot the visitors by a 5-3 margin. Lancaster goalkeeper Emily Dolan made three first half saves while TSF’s Caitlin Hoffer made four saves in the second half.

LONG ISLAND ROUGH RIDERS 4, NEW YORK MAGIC 1

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY - In the rubber match of the season series between the two former W-League adversaries, the Long Island Rough Riders would capitalize on a run of second half goals to win both of their East Conference matches against the New York Magic. On Sunday afternoon at Cy Donnelly Stadium, Long Island (4-3-2) scored early and late to notch the 4-1 win over the Magic (0-8-1), who have yet to emerge after 90 minutes played with a victory in 2016.

Rough Riders forward Christina Bellero opened the scoring in the 7th minute with an open-net tap-in. The game would remain at 1-0 until the 59th minute, when with her first touch of the game Hope Quinonez played Bellero through on goal as she grabbed her brace. The Saint John’s star now has six goals scored in 2016, good for a tie in third in all of UWS with New Jersey’s Jeanine Nunez.

The Magic knocked on the door with a late goal in the 80th minute by Carina Subia but the Rough Riders kept the door shut. They responded with goals in the 85th and 88th minute by Erin Neville and Quinonez, respectively, to earn the 4-1 victory and three points. The Rough Riders still have a chance to secure a second-place finish in the East and will end their season on the road against the TSF Academy Valkyries on Wednesday.

NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 2, NEW JERSEY COPA F.C. 3

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - Familiar storylines from their first season in the UWS East abounded for the New England Mutiny in their match vs. 2016 East champion New Jersey Copa F.C. at West Springfield High School on Saturday night. For the fifth time this year, New England scored the opening goal only to relinquish the lead. The Mutiny (5-4) paid for it as Copa (8-1-1) completed their regular season with a 3-2 win on a game-winner on the last touch of the game.

Camille Bowen - whose defensive miscue was taken advantage of on New England’s first goal - headed home a Jackie Bruno free kick in second half stoppage time to redeem her earlier mistake. The match started out in the Mutiny’s favor and they forced NJCFC into a defensive error in the 9th minute. Abby Sotomayor pressured the Copa defense, and intercepted Bowen’s back pass.

The forward dribbled in 1v1 on goal and slotted her shot inside the far post past NJCFC goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami. The Mutiny would hold the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the start of the second half would be a different matter. Copa’s pressure paid off in the 49th minute, as Bruno fed league-leading scorer Krystyna Freda in on goal and she skillfully placed her shot past New England keeper Annie Ulliac.

NJCFC went up 2-1 in the 59th minute, as Freda sent in a ball from the right flank and her cross-shot flew over Ulliac into the far side netting. New England defender Jennifer Cafferky gathered the ball after a corner kick and hammered home her shot from close distance inside the upper 90 of the goal for the 2-2 score.
