Mutiny captures 2nd-place in East; Magic earns draw

NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 3, TSF ACADEMY VALKYRIES 0

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA - All that was left to play for the New England Mutiny in their regular season finale against the TSF Academy Valkyries was a second-place finish in the UWS East Conference. The Mutiny (6-4) finished their claim on East runner-up status early in the Valkyries match (3-4-3) as two first half goals from Kate Howarth propelled the team to a 3-0 win at East Longmeadow High School.

New England didn’t allow the visitors to get a foothold in this match, and got on the score board in the 8th minute when Sharlotte Pernice gave the ball to Howarth on the left flank. The veteran forward dribbled towards goal and while her first shot was blocked, she gathered the rebound and beat TSF goalkeeper Caitlin Hoffer (seven saves) for the 1-0 lead.

The Mutiny notched the second goal in the 17th minute as Deb Nelson won the ball in the midfield and deftly sent Howarth in on a 1v1 opportunity. The team captain dribbled around Hoffer’s dive and deposited the ball into the empty net for the 2-0 score. The second half would see the Valkyries hold more possession but they couldn’t muster pressure on attack, as New England keeper Ashley Cavanaugh (who replaced starter Annie Ulliac at halftime) only made one save.

Abby Sotomayor finished the Mutiny scoring in stoppage time on her blast from the top of the penalty area. With her two first half goals, Howarth has now moved past Meghan Schnur into second-place on the Mutiny’s all-time scoring chart. Her 76 career points (32 goals, 12 assists) now only trails the top mark of 93 points, set by Mary-Frances Monroe (36 goals, 21 assists).

NEW YORK MAGIC 0, LANCASTER INFERNO 0

BROOKLYN, NY - The New York Magic didn’t register a victory all season in UWS, but after their regular season finale against the Lancaster Inferno, they did make a point. Actually, the Magic (0-8-2) got a point and ended their six-game losing streak as they withstood the Inferno (4-5-1) and counted on the heroics of goalkeeper Samantha Depken in a 0-0 draw at the Verrazano Sports Complex.

With her six stops in the draw, Depken claimed the honor of making the most amount of saves (67) in all of UWS this season, besting New England Mutiny keeper Annie Ulliac (45) by a wide margin of 22 saves. The Lancaster tandem of Emily Dolan and Emily Armstrong would each make one save in the scoreless draw. It was the first draw of the season for the Inferno, who missed out on a third-place finish in the East to the Long Island Rough Riders (4-3-3).
