Buffalo-area will now have top-tier team for local collegiate players

BUFFALO, NY - The Western New York Flash announced today that they will participate in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) starting this coming summer. The team will feature top-tier level play for collegiate-level athletes returning to the western New York area for the summer. The Flash will compete in the UWS East Conference with the full 2017 alignment and schedule to be announced in the near future.

“This is an exciting day for UWS,” said League Director Joe Ferrara, Jr. “Simply and emphatically, no one has sacrificed more for the sport of women’s soccer than the Sahlen family. The Flash bring an established level of professionalism that will enhance the quality of the league from the opening whistle this season.”

“We are excited to bring United Women’s Soccer to Buffalo and continue the strong legacy of the Western New York Flash in the women's game,” said Vice President Aaran Lines. “This team completes the Flash pyramid offering a final destination for collegiate and post-collegiate players in the WNY area looking to continually advance their game.”

United Women’s Soccer was formed late in 2015 to help fill the gap in the development of female soccer players between the collegiate game and the professional & international game. There will be twenty teams from around the country participating in league play following the addition of the Flash and other teams yet to be announced.

“It is very gratifying to be able to give back to the game and provide a home for many of our WNY Flash Academy alum, in addition to other western New York area players,” said Lines. “Not only will players be able to further develop their game at the next level, it will also provide high-level soccer for the community and young WNY Flash Academy players to come out and support."

The Western New York Flash has been a storied soccer program for years after stints in the USL W-League, Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) and most recently the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The club won their fifth title in eight years after capturing the 2016 NWSL Championship.

The Flash will play their home matches in Buffalo, NY. Interested players should email kayla.kent@wnyflash.com at their earliest convenience. The UWS season starts in May and runs through late July. For more information on UWS, visit http://www.uwssoccer.com.
