New Jersey Copa FC stays undefeated all-time at home

NEW YORK MAGIC 0, NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1

BROOKLYN, NY - The New England Mutiny avoided a loss in the second of their two-game weekend road trip to New York City on Sunday night, coming away with a 1-0 win over the New York Magic at Poly Prep Country Day School. After suffering a 4-2 defeat to the New York Surf in the Bronx on Saturday, playing in Brooklyn the next day proved to be just as difficult for the Mutiny (3-1 East) as their old rival in the Magic (0-2-1 East) made it a long evening for the visitors. New England goalkeeper Gabby Arruda made her first start of the season in net, and she proved her worth with a pair of fine stops in the first half.

The score would stay scoreless as both teams went into halftime. The second half would see the Mutiny find more joy in the offensive end, as the offside trap played by the hosts frustrated them (9-1 in offsides). Defender Lauren Aldrich would foreshadow her heroics later in the match with an effort in the 62nd minute, forcing a big save from New York keeper Sierra Bonham. In the 86th minute, she took advantage of a lapse in attention by the Magic defense and went in on a breakaway off a throw-in. Aldrich beat Bonham for the 1-0 score. New York would push hard for the equalizer but to no avail.

LANCASTER INFERNO 2, NEW YORK SURF 1

MILLERSVILLE, PA - The Lancaster Inferno came away with their second win of the season on Sunday afternoon against a tough & talented opponent in the New York Surf  - the amateur affiliate of Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). In their home opener at Pucillo Field, the Inferno (2-2 East) would hold on for the 2-1 win after a late rally from the Surf (2-1-1 East). The team were led by midfielder Tesa McKibben (goal) and forward Emily Kupsov (goal, assist) on the day. The combination of Jordan Kamp and Kelly O'Brien in goal would make nine saves in the victory.

Lancaster opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Kupsov fed the ball to McKibben at the top of the penalty area, and she fired her shot to the low left past New York goalkeeper Colleen Hickey (six saves). In the 50th minute, the Inferno would double their lead when McKibben was taken down in the penalty box by a Surf defender. Kupsov would convert on the ensuing penalty kick for the 2-0 score and the eventual game-winner. The Surf would gain control of play and in the 71st minute, forward Erica Murphy capitalized on a rebound from a Flo Gamby shot after a great save by O’Brien to make the score 2-1.

ROCHESTER LADY LANCERS 0, LONG ISLAND ROUGH RIDERS 2

ROCHESTER, NY - Sunday afternoon’s game between the Rochester Lady Lancers (0-3-1 East) and the Long Island Rough Riders (3-0-1 East) at Charlie Schiano Sr. Field at Aquinas Institute was a tale of two halves for the host side. Rochester had their best opportunities to come away with a win in the first half but could not convert, while Long Island came out in the second half and put their stamp on the result in an eventual 2-0 victory for the visitors. Goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo made three saves in the shutout.

The Lady Lancers pushed the pace and created pressure through a pair of scoring chances by forward Alexa Antetomaso early in the match. But Rochester goalkeeper Caitie Broderick (12 saves) had to also make a pair of high-quality stops to keep the score at 0-0 as the game went into halftime. The Rough Riders would hold the run of play in the second half as Morgan Santoro came off the bench and netted the eventual game-winner in the 60th minute on a through ball. In the 79th minute, Kayla Saager lofted her shot past Broderick from 20 yards out for the 2-0 score.

WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH 0, LONG ISLAND ROUGH RIDERS 7

BUFFALO, NY - The Western New York Flash (0-2-2 East) were looking to finally get in the win column against the Long Island Rough Riders, but were shut out by the visitors in a 7-0 losing effort at Niagara University. Saturday night’s match got off to a quick start, with Long Island taking an early lead in the fifth minute as Madison Vasquez scored the opening goal on a breakaway. Meghan Santoro followed that up with a goal of her own in the 15th minute to give the Rough Riders a two-goal lead.

The Flash played some stout defense for over twenty minutes, until Santoro and Francesca Venezia added another two tallies for the visiting team in the latter stages of the first half. Coming out for the second half, the Flash were unable to gain momentum as Kayla Saager completed her hat trick on back-to-back-to-back Rough Rider goals, with the second coming off a free kick, to put Long Island in front by a 7-0 score. Meg Tock started in goal for the Flash, making several big saves despite the Rough Riders totaling 17 shots over 90 minutes. Western New York also generated some scoring chances of their own on seven shots.

NEW YORK SURF 4, NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 2

BRONX, NY - In their first big test of the Summer 2017 season, the New England Mutiny hit the road and traveled south to New York City to take on conference newcomers New York Surf on Saturday afternoon. The Surf scored two goals early in each half in the 4-2 victory over the Mutiny at SUNY Maritime. New York has been heralded for their defense in their first two matches but it was their offense that came out firing. Midfielder Jordan Clark put the Surf on the score board in the eighth minute, blasting her header off a Flo Gamby corner kick off the cross bar and past New England goalkeeper Annie Ulliac (three saves).

Five minutes later, forward Erica Murphy maneuvered through the Mutiny defense and beat Ulliac on her 1v1 opportunity for the 2-0 score. New England got a goal back through forward Kate Howarth in the 29th minute. After a New York giveaway, she dodged around the defense and fired a low shot inside the far post. The Surf notched two goals early in the second half to put the game out of reach. After a cross from the right flank, forward Maegen Doyle slotted her shot inside the left post for the eventual game-winning goal in the 54th minute. Four minutes later, Doyle assisted on Furtuna Velaj’s goal for the 4-1 score. Howarth tallied her sixth goal of the season for the Mutiny in the 74th minute on a penalty kick.

NEW JERSEY COPA FC 2, LANCASTER INFERNO 0

HOLMDEL, NJ - New Jersey Copa FC (2-1 East) is still unbeaten all-time at home as the defending Eastern Conference champions were victorious over the Lancaster Inferno by a 2-0 score on Saturday afternoon. Unassisted strikes from Camille Bowen in the 18th minute and some insurance from Katarina Nilsson in the 73rd combined with the Copa defense to post a clean sheet for the second time this year at Saint John Vianney High School. Playing for the first time in two weeks and coming off just the third loss in its history, NJCFC improved to 6-0-1 all-time at home in its two-year existence.

NJCFC got the only goal it needed in the 18th minute as Bowen, a Marist College star and First-Team All-MAAC honoree, collected a deflection in the middle of the field and unleashed a blast to the far post from more than 30 yards out. Nilsson entered the game in the 61st minute and made her presence felt in a 24-minute reserve role. After beating a defender on the right side of the six-yard box midway through the 73rd minute, her first shot was blocked but she tucked the rebound into the far left side netting for her third goal of the season.
