UWS featured in the press; teams announce more signings

CALGARY FOOTHILLS WFC... Calgary Head Coach Troye Flannery has continued to build his roster and has released eight more signings via social media in anticipation of the upcoming 2018 season: goalkeeper Sarah Dilling; defenders Grace Stordy and Talia White; midfielders Sydney Gummerson, Yvonne Northover, Amanda Pak and Sienna Prince-McPherson; and forward Joelle Gosselin. Dilling, Pak and Gosselin are veterans of the 2017 side that captured second place in the UWS West. Dilling was a 2015 WPSL All Star for FC Tucson. Gosselin led the team in scoring last season and was named to the All-UWS West Conference Team. Northover was the captain of the 2015 Foothills WFC side and played for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat in 2010.

LA GALAXY OC STAR CALLED UP TO MEXICO WNT... Former University of Colorado defender and recent LA Galaxy OC Women signing Joss Orejel was called up to the Mexico Women's National Team for their recent friendlies vs. the United States. It was her first call-up to the full national team after being a part of Mexico's youth national program. Orejel completed her senior season in Boulder last fall and in her four years with the Buffs, she started 57 matches as a left-outside back and finished her career ranked fifth all-time in assists - the most ever for a defender. Joss was also a 2017 United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team selection. CU did a feature on their former standout and you can read it HERE.

LANCASTER INFERNO... Lancaster Head Coach Francisco Cleaves recently announced five more signings via social media to his 2018 roster: midfielders Megan Carroll, Taylor Folk, Traci Mohl, Haley Peachey and Teresa Rook (formerly Rynier). Carroll was part of the Washington Spirit Reserves in 2017 & played for Hershey FC of the WPSL in 2015 & 2016. Folk was a four-year starter at York College. Mohl returns for her third season in a Inferno uniform and played in all 10 games for Lancaster in 2017. Peachey played in 16 games as a freshman at Millersville University. Rook has returned to the Inferno after playing in the 2016 season. The former James Madison University star has played professionally in three countries: Ottawa Fury (2011 & 2014), Kvarnsvedens IK – Sweden (2012), FH Hafnafjördur – Iceland (2013).

MICHIGAN LEGENDS FC... MLFC recently agreed to terms with Saimir Rada to take the position of Head Coach for the 2018 season. In 2017, Rada guided Legends FC to a 4-3-3 record and an appearance to the UWS Midwest Semifinals. The Albanian native holds a UEFA 'A' license and has experience at the Club, High School, College, Olympic Development and Semi-Professional levels. Rada has announced his first 11 signings of the 2018 season via social media: goalkeeper Izzy Nino; defenders Avery Hay, Katrina Koomen, Sarah Mitchell and Abby Willerer; midfielders Claire Cahalan, Nikhita Jacob and Sheila Magnan; and forwards Alia Frederick, Gracie Krygier and Megan Trapp. Hay, Koomen and Trapp are veterans of the 2017 side that rode a late season run to qualify for the Midwest playoffs. Hay was the 2016 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year for DePaul University. Trapp returns as team captain.

SMILES FEATURED IN WORCESTER MAGAZINE... the Worcester Smiles announced in January that they would take part in the 2018 UWS season in the East Conference, and interest has been slowly building in the first-year team. After being featured in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in February, the Smiles extended into a wider grin after taking part in a feature in Worcester Magazine regarding the sports renaissance in the once thriving Central Massachusetts city. The manufacturing hub has rebranded and rebuilt itself in recent years and has witnessed an influx of sports teams in a city with a long sports tradition. The Smiles open their 2018 season on Saturday, May 12 when they host the New York Surf at Foley Stadium. For the full feature written by Walter Bird, Jr., click HERE.

UWS IN THE WOSO ZONE... UWS Commissioner Joe Ferrara, Jr. sat down recently with JJ Duke and the folks at Women's Soccer Zone - a media outlet dedicated to women's soccer since 2009 - for a long form story on the development of the national pro-am league. Ferrara has been involved within the game for decades and has seen many ups and downs at the lower levels during his years working in Women's Soccer. Additionally to him being the Commissioner of the league, he is also the President and General Manager of the New England Mutiny, one of the founding teams of UWS and has been in existence since 1999. But in the two short years of running the league, his expectations have been surpassed greatly. For the full story, click HERE.
