GRFC victorious in rematch with DET; 1st franchise win for LAN

FRIDAY, MAY 18

GENESEE FC 1, MICHIGAN LEGENDS FC 2

FLINT, MI - The Michigan Legends spoiled the UWS debut of Genesee FC with a 2-1 victory in Midwest Conference action at the newly renovated Atwood Stadium at Kettering University. The Legends struck first in the 23rd minute as Jennifer Borawski ran on to a a 65-yard bomb and was able to run onto it just ahead of the challenge from Genesee goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman (12 saves). In the 33rd minute, Madison Hughes doubled the lead with a clinical finish off a Legends' corner kick. The first goal in Genesee FC history would come right before halftime on a gorgeous strike from Madeleine Zayan. Her strike from the top of the 18-yard box hit the underside of the crossbar and into goal to cut the lead to 2-1. A scoreless second half and a five-save performance from Michigan keeper Isabel Nino preserved the 2-1 win for the visitors.

SUNDAY, MAY 20

GRAND RAPIDS FC 1, DETROIT SUN FC 0

GRANDVILLE, MI - The steadily burgeoning rivalry between the Grand Rapids FC Women and Detroit Sun FC did not disappoint on Sunday night at Grandville High School. The last time the two teams met was at the same facility in the 2017 UWS Midwest Final, with the GRFC Women emerging victorious and winning the conference title by the same score. Jodian Morris' strike from a Lizzie Paul feed just three minutes into the second half proved to be the difference. Detroit's Madison Clem kept the visitors in the match with a 10-save performance while GRFC goalkeeper Maia Perez (three saves) got the win. It was Detroit's first loss of the year after they opened with wins over Michigan Legends FC and Indy Premier SC in Week I action. They drop to 2-1 on the season. Grand Rapids moves up to 1-0-1 for the season after a 2-2 home draw against Lansing United on opening weekend.

GENESEE FC 1, LANSING UNITED 2

FLINT, MI - Lansing United created team history at Atwood Stadium on Sunday night with their first-ever franchise victory, defeating Genesee FC by a 2-1 score. United stepped on the pitch with an attacking state of mind. Captain Dani Stephan started it off six minutes in but her shot went wide right. The momentum continued as midfielder Riko Sagara and forward Anna Stinson had scoring opportunities. Despite Lansing's abundance of offense, the game remained 0-0 until the 38th minute when Genesee scored first after forward Katelyn Wilkowski beat a defender and converted on a breakaway. But the lead didn’t last, as six minutes later Brittany Tanner knocked the ball in off an assist from Aubrey Schierbeek which began with a United corner kick. Lansing won the match in the 52nd minute, as Erin Doster tallied her first goal of the season in front of the goal on a pass from Schierbeek at the end line. Grace Kraft made five saves for the win while Annabelle Hegeman (five saves) picked up the loss.
