GRFC aim to continue strong start, DET and MLFC face key tests

Genesee FC vs. Grand Rapids FC Women

7:00 PM EDT – Atwood Stadium at Kettering University (Flint, MI)

It has not been an easy start to the 2018 season for Genesee FC, as coming into last week's action they dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions to both the Michigan Legends and Lansing United. Things didn’t look much better after last Friday's away match to Michigan and dropped a 4-0 decision. But Chelsea Hunter’s side was able to salvage a positive out of the weekend with a goalless draw against the Fort Wayne Gryphons, picking up their first point of the season in the process. Annabelle Hegeman has been one of the most tested goalkeepers in all of UWS this season, hitting double digits in saves multiple times this season. But she was a key catalyst in securing the point against the Gryphons, where she stopped all 10 shots on target en route to her first clean sheet of the season.

She will have her hands full again on Friday as Grand Rapids FC make the trek out to Flint for the first of their two matches on the weekend. Jodian Morris continues her fine run of recent form as after scoring the lone goal in the win against Detroit Sun FC on May 20, she was at it again this past Friday in GRFC’s return match at Detroit. She scored in the 4th minute to give her side the early lead and drew a late penalty, which allowed Grace Labadie to secure the winner, which she did from the spot in the 86th minute. With Grand Rapids seeing their season hit the midway point after this weekend, they would love to get their Week IV slate off with a positive result and keeping themselves at the top of the conference table.

Indy Premier SC vs. Lansing United

7:00 PM EDT – Marian University (Indianapolis, IN)

Indy Premier open up their 2018 home slate this week after playing away from Marian University for the first two weekends. After their opening week match saw a strong performance from goalie Gina Cerny, as her nine save effort against Detroit kept a 2-0 loss from becoming much more lopsided, Indy bounced back last week with a 1-0 victory at Fort Wayne, with Chloe Ulmer’s 40th minute tally proving to be the difference. Indy will want to se the tone early against Lansing as this is the first of back-to-back matches against the UWS debutant side.

Lansing United’s inaugural UWS campaign could not have started any better. After stunning the defending UWS Champions Grand Rapids to a draw, they followed up that performance with a 2-1 win to Genesee FC in Week II. After a week off last week, Head Coach Jason Crist’s team will look to keep the momentum rolling in their direction with a road trip out to Indianapolis. Aubrey Schierbeek continues to play the leading role in offensive production as after she scored in the draw at Grand Rapids, she set up both goals against Genesee, which netted her appearances on the UWS Team of the Week for the first two weeks of the season. With Grand Rapids and Michigan battling on Saturday, a result for Lansing could see them jump into the top-three in the Midwest at the end of the weekend.

Grand Rapids FC Women vs. Michigan Legends FC

7:00 PM EDT – Grandville H.S (Grandville, MI)

This will be the second match in as many days for Grand Rapids as they will see the first half of their schedule come to a close against the Michigan Legends. GRFC holds the all-time series edge with a win and a draw, including an emphatic 3-1 victory at Grandville H.S. to begin the 2017 slate.

But similar to Grand Rapids, Michigan is also coming into this week in fine form with back-to-back victories over Genesee. After a less-than-ideal start to the 2018 season by dropping a 4-1 decision to Detroit, Michigan have scored six goals in the two victories over Genesee, including scoring four goals in the first half in their home opener last weekend. This match is even more crucial for Michigan as this will be the only time these two teams meet during the regular season. And with the team playing four of their final five matches at the Legacy Center Fieldhouse, a venue where the Legends are 4-1-1 all-time, points against GRFC on the road could be vital in their quest towards the postseason.

Genesee FC vs. Detroit Sun FC

4:00 PM EDT – Atwood Stadium at Kettering University (Flint, MI)

Genesee finish off their two-match weekend as they welcome in Detroit to Atwood Stadium at Kettering University. Thus far, it’s been a tale of two stories at home for Genesee this season as both losses have come with a 2-1 score line, but with different ways of getting there. On May 18, the hosts were forced to play catch up as Michigan scored twice in the first half before Madeleine Zayan scored right before halftime, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. Two days later, Katelyn Wilkowski got her team on the board first against Lansing before conceding pair of goals right before and after. With Genesee only having a handful of matches after this one, they will need to look to strike early against a potent Detroit offense if they want to take points away and build a case for a spot in the postseason.

Back-to-back losses to Grand Rapids temporarily knocked Detroit Sun off Cloud Nine after wins in their first two matches of the season. But Head Coach Skipper Mukhtar would be happy to see that leading striker Madison Schupbach got herself back on the score sheet last week after not finding the net in the road match to Grand Rapids on May 20. The former Bowling Green striker has been everything for Detroit in the teams’ two-year history, as her nine goals and four assist mark in 2017 carried over well into the first week of 2018, where she bagged two goals in the May 13th win over Indy and assisted a goal in the opener against Michigan. If she goes, the rest of the Detroit offense goes and hopefully for the Sun, she will be hitting that form against as the team sets their sights on the middle portion of their schedule.
