GRFC pick up four point weekend, LAN and DET net key victories

FRIDAY, JUNE 1

GENESEE FC 0, GRAND RAPIDS FC WOMEN 7

FLINT, MI – Grand Rapids started off their two-match weekend by tying a team record by putting seven goals past Genesee FC, equaling the seven-goal output GRFC posted in their 2017 regular season finale at Indy Premier. Bailey Kohorn bagged a natural hat-trick on her season debut, scoring in the 14th, 23rd and 51st minute, while former Grand Valley State striker Marti Corby added a pair of goals 16 minutes apart from each other in the second half. Cindy Lay and Grace Labadie also had their goal scoring shoes on as they each tallied a goal inside the final ten minutes. Kendra Longoria was the key facilitator in the Grand Rapids attack as she assisted on both Corby’s goals and the first of Kohorn’s tallies. It was an easy day in goal for Maia Perez as she was only called upon to make one save en route to posting her second clean sheet of the season. Annabelle Hegman started in net for Genesee and made two saves in the first half before Samantha Tracey took over in the second half, saving three shots.

INDY PREMIER SC 1, LANSING UNITED 5

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – It doesn’t take long for the ball to find the back of the net and Lansing’s Anna Stinson proved that to be true as she only needed 18 seconds after the opening kickoff to score. In the games’ opening moments, she latched onto a through ball from Riko Sagara and put it past Indy Premier’s goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hicks, posting the fastest goal in UWS history. The hosts though didn’t let that quick strike down their spirits as in the 8th minute, Mikayla Brown leveled the proceedings with a strike that beat Lansing’s ‘keeper Sarah Maracani to her left. Maracani was forced to come up with several key saves throughout the remainder of the first half before Lansing took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Olivia Trombley headed home a Sagara corner kick in the 43rd minute. Jason Crist’s team never looked back from there as Erin Doster extended the lead to 3-1 within five minutes after the restart, with Alexis Mitchell burying a long-distance screamer just three minutes later. Abigail Gilmore rounded out the goal scoring for Lansing with a stoppage time tally, capping off a strong all-around performance for the visitors and giving Lansing a 2-0-1 record through three games in their inaugural season.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2

GRAND RAPIDS FC WOMEN 2, MICHIGAN LEGENDS FC 2

GRANDVILLE, MI – Coming off of back-to-back victories against Genesee in the past few weeks, Michigan got off to a bright start on the road as they were up 2-0 against the defending UWS Champions inside of 25 minutes, with Megan Trapp scoring in the 16th minute and Katrina Koomen doubling Michigan's lead four minutes later. But, the fighting spirit of GRFC came out in the second half as despite playing their second match in 24 hours, they pushed to try and get a result at home. Natalie Belsito was subbed on in the 68th minute and moments later, she found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half. Six minutes after Belsito’s goal, Anya Pallas was fouled inside the penalty area and set the stage for Grace Labadie, who buried the penalty for her second goal in as many games. It continues an impressive streak at home for Grand Rapids as they have yet to lose within the confines of Grandville H.S. since beginning play in UWS last year. The result also keeps GRFC at the top of the table while despite the loss, Michigan are still in the hunt for a potential postseason berth.

SUNDAY, JUNE 3

GENESEE FC 0, DETROIT SUN FC 1

FLINT, MI – After giving up seven goals on Friday night to Grand Rapids, Genesee FC hoped to put that performance behind them quickly as they welcomed in Detroit Sun for a Sunday afternoon match at Atwood Stadium at Kettering University. And Chelsea Hunter’s team turned in a much more inspired performance against a strong Detroit side, who were looking to get back in the win column after dropping two straight matches to Grand Rapids. It was the visitors who went ahead as Madison Schupbach scored her team leading fourth goal of the season, finishing off a Dani Evans pass in the 22nd minute. However, the Sun would not find a second goal in the match as Annabelle Hegeman turned in another superb performance in net, stopping seven shots, including a few key saves in the second half. There was an opportunity for Genesee to press in the final 25 minutes as Detroit’s Rachel Deluca got sent off in the 65th minute for a red card, but the hosts could not get a shot past Madison Clem, as her three-save performance netted her the second shutout of her 2018 campaign. The win sees Detroit leap back into second place with nine points (3-2-0) at the midway point in their season.
