HOU power nine past ASA, FCA take Home Opener

SATURDAY, JUNE 2

HOUSTON ACES 9, ASA EL PASO 0

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Aces opened up Southwest Conference play with a goal-scoring barrage as they powered nine goals past ASA El Paso on Saturday evening at the Houston Sports Park. The Aces only needed ten minutes to get on the board as Isabella Echeverri finished off Tatiana Ariza’s helper and never looked back from there. Julie Gavorski scored a first half brace, netting goals in the 29th and 45th minute and Melanie Barnes bagged a pair of second half goals. Not wanting to miss out on the goal-scoring, 2017 UWS West Conference First Team member Rachel Owens came on to start the second half and scored a hat trick, netting goals in the 47th, 64th and 66th minute. It was a strong statement from the Aces in the opening week of Southwest action as they look to carry the momentum into next weeks’ action at North Texas.

SUNDAY, JUNE 3

HAR FC 3, ASA EL PASO 2

HOUSTON, TX – Despite the tough score in their opening match against the Aces, ASA El Paso was back on the field less than 24 hours later to take on HAR FC. The hosts got on the board in the 20th minute as Sabrina Munguia scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon as she finished off Stephanie Garcia’s deliver. 15 minutes later, Jamie Carillo equalized for the visiting side and the 1-1 scoreline carried into halftime. Garcia only needed seconds after the second half to get herself on the score sheet as Narcedalia Yanez found the University of Southern Mississippi product, giving HAR FC a 2-1 advantage. That lead grew to 3-1 in the 67th minute as the Garcia to Munguia connection worked again, with Manguia finishing her second of the game past ASA goalkeeper Megan Smith. That goal turned out to be necessary for the hosts as ASA benefitted from a HAR FC own-goal five minutes from full-time. But no further comeback materialized and HAR FC took home all three points. Smith finished with 10 saves on the day for ASA El Paso while Madison Raines stopped five shots in the winning effort for HAR FC.

FC AUSTIN ELITE 2, NORTH TEXAS IMAGE 0

ROUND ROCK, TX – FC Austin Elite made their UWS debut and only needed a handful of minutes to make their mark in the Southwest Conference. In the fourth minute, Kimberlin Palacios sent the home fans into early euphoria as she scored the opener, set up well from Jayme Woodfill’s service. The offense never slowed down for either team after the opening tally as both teams generated plenty of chances but the score remained 1-0 at the halfway mark. That score stayed the same until the FCA’s Christina Arteaga found the back of the net with 12 minutes to go, finishing off the chance that Carina Baltrip-Reyes set up. That was all the help that Paige Wallace needed as Trinity University product stopped all nine shots she saw go on target for the clean sheet. It was an equally active day for North Texas’ Courtney Burnette, who also stopped nine shots, but her offense could not find the answer to beat Wallace on the other end of the field.
