CFWFC net a pair of victories, SAC win in thrilling fashion

FRIDAY, JUNE 1

CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 3, SO CAL CRUSH FC 0

CALGARY, AB – CFWFC backed up their season opening 3-0 victory last week at Real Salt Lake Women with a resounding 3-0 win over So Cal Crush at the Calgary Soccer Center. While the spotlight was on Calgary’s recent signing of Canadian Women’s National Team goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé, Lauren Raimondo stole the show by scoring a pair of goals in the first half. She opened up the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing off Jessica Jones’ ball before stunning the home crowd with a wonder goal in the 26th minute by deftly half-volleying a ball past So Cal’s goalkeeper Ruth-Maria Soto. After assisting Raimondo’s first goal, Jones got into the goal scoring act as well by curling a left footed effort past Soto in the 88th minute, which sealed the three points. Labbé was called on to make five saves in the match in her UWS debut, picking up the clean sheet in the process while Soto finished with five stops for So Cal.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2

COLORADO PRIDE 2, SANTA CLARITA BLUE HEAT 3

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – After a week off, Colorado Pride looked to pick up their first win of the season as they welcomed in the Santa Clarita Blue Heat for a Saturday evening showdown. The Pride got on the board in the 12th minute as Eliza Bona received a through ball from Maddie Tominello and beat the Blue Heat’s goalkeeper, Lauren Brzykcy, to give her team the early lead. However, ten minutes later, the visitors equalized as Kassey Massey headed home Hayley Gonzalez’s cross. The 1-1 scoreline remained the same until halftime but both teams traded goals in the first five minutes of the second half, as Gonzalez and Bona each scored for their respective teams. It set up a very exciting last 40 minutes as both teams had their chances to put themselves ahead. In the waning moments of the match, a Blue Heat cross into the box was mis-handled by Pride goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith and dropped to the feet of Chloe Kastanada, who scored the winner in the 85th minute. The Pride did create one more chance in second half stoppage time as Aleesa Muir hit a shot destined for the top corner, but was denied by a great save from Brzykcy and the Blue Heat hung on for a 3-2 result. After drawing the first two matches of their season, a win was a welcome result for Leonardo Neveleff’s side.

LA GALAXY OC WOMEN 4, REAL SALT LAKE WOMEN 0

IRVINE, CA – After LA Galaxy OC Women drew 1-1 at Santa Clarita to open the season, they welcomed in Real Salt Lake Women on Saturday night for the teams’ first ever home match at Orange County Great Park. And the hosts wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as former UC-Irvine striker Noel Baham scored the opener in the 15th minute. RSLW’s Carly Nelson had a busy game in net as she made seven saves in total and did a good job at keeping the score at 1-0 through halftime. Right before the hour mark, the hosts got their second goal from another UC-Irvine product, this being Kiana Palacias. LAGOC picked up two more goals inside the final ten minutes as Chelsey Patterson scored in the 85th minute and Sherifa Sumaila added a fourth in stoppage time. Sarah Davis picked up the clean sheet for LA, only needing to make four saves in the process.

SUNDAY, JUNE 3

COLORADO PRIDE 0, CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 3

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – It’s often said that good things come in threes. And when Calgary Foothills WFC have won all three of their matches with three goals scored, Troye Flannery’s side has been seeing a lot of good things come their way lately. After making the trek to Colorado from Alberta after the teams’ victory on Friday night, the legs were a little weary in the early goings for CFWFC. But eventually the opener came ten minutes before halftime as Alexandria Lamontagne tucked home Rehana Murani’s cross for her first goal of the season. The 1-0 score would remain the same until the visitors struck twice inside the final ten minutes to seal the three points. Christabel Oduro struck in the 82nd minute for score Calgary’s second goal and just four minutes later, Camilla Shymka added the insurance third goal. Jessica Jones assisted on that goal, wrapping up an impressive weekend as the former England Youth international had a five-point weekend with a goal and three assists in two matches. The two sides will meet again on Friday, June 8 at the Calgary Soccer Center, where Colorado will hope that a road trip will reverse their fortunes, as their four-match homestand at the Mountain Lion Stadium concluded with three losses and a draw.
