LAN post back-to-back victories, DET cruise at home

FRIDAY, JUNE 8

FORT WAYNE GRYPHONS 1, LANSING UNITED 2

FORT WAYNE, IN – Lansing United wrapped up their season opening, four-match road trip with a 2-1 victory at Fort Wayne, upping their 2018 record to 3-0-1 (10 points). But despite Lansing controlling the play through the early stages, it was the host Gryphons who struck for the opener. Faith Lewis was able to capitalize on a Lansing turnover in the midfield and pounced on the opportunity, finishing off a breakaway goal in the 31st minute. But the response from Lansing came just five minutes later as a quick transition opened the door for Lexi Pelafas, who scored from close range for the equalizer. The 1-1 score stayed the same until the match reached the few moments as second half second half substitute Riko Sagara, a member of Week IV’s UWS Team of the Week, set up a chance in the 81st minute for Pelafas, who buried her second goal of the match and ultimately the winning goal. It was a good start to the weekend for Lansing as they would have to turn around in less than 48 hours to play their second match of the weekend against a surging Michigan Legends team.

DETROIT SUN FC 4, GENESEE FC 0

PONTIAC, MI – It was all Detroit Sun on Friday night at the Ultimate Indoor Soccer Arena as a pair of goals inside the first 10 minutes propelled the hosts to a 4-0 victory over Genesee. For the third straight game, Madison Schupbach found the back of the net as she scored the opening tally in the 6th minute. Less than two minutes later, Tori Singstock extended the lead to 2-0 and right before halftime, Madison Pogarch put the game out of reach with a 43rd minute goal. Indiana University product Abby Allen assisted on the teams’ first two goals while Dani Evans notched her league leading sixth assist of the season as she set up Pogarchs’ tally. Another Indiana Hoosier found her way onto the scoresheet for Detroit as Maya Piper netted her first goal of the season in the 90th minute, rounding out Detroit’s second four-goal output in a game this season. Marina Manzo had a quiet evening in goal, only being called upon to make three saves for the solo clean sheet, her first of the season. Genesee’s Annabelle Hegeman made nine saves in 83 minutes before Samantha Tracey saw out the remaining minutes of the contest.

SUNDAY, JUNE 10

LANSING UNITED 2, MICHIGAN LEGENDS 1

EAST LANSING, MI – For the first time in franchise history, Lansing United took to their home field at Archer Stadium, as they faced off against Michigan Legends. The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric from opening kickoff, however it was the visiting legends who fed off the energy early. They created a couple of early chances, including Jennifer Borawski rounding Lansing’s goalkeeper Grace Kraft in the 10th minute, but only to see Olivia Trombley clear Borawski’s effort off the line. After scoring a pair of goals on Friday night’s victory at Fort Wayne, Lexi Pelafas had her scoring shoes on again as she latched onto Anna Stinson’s cross in the 20th minute and slotted it home. Lansing would add to their one-goal lead shortly after halftime as Dani Stephan rose up to meet Madison Duncan’s cross in the 48th minute and her towering header looped over Michigan’s goalkeeper Isabel Nino and into the back of the net. Michigan responded less than three minutes after Stephan’s goal as Alia Frederick bent a long curling effort past Craft after Lansing failed to clear a corner kick. But Lansing were able to batten down the hatches for the remainder of the contest and pick up three points. The result puts Lansing in first place with 13 points (4-0-1) and will play four of their final five matches at home, putting Jason Crist’s team in a strong position to finish top in the Midwest Conference.
