HOU continue their fast start to 2018, NTX earn a weekend split

SATURDAY, JUNE 9

NORTH TEXAS IMAGE 0, HOUSTON ACES 4

LANCASTER, TX – After routing ASA El Paso 9-0 at home in Week IV, Houston Aces traveled to Cedar Valley College to take on North Texas Image, who were looking for their first result of the season after falling 2-0 to FC Austin Elite last weekend. But it was more of the same for the Aces in Week V as they generated 23 shots on target and kept the Image’s defense busy all afternoon long. Aina Torres gave Houston the lead in the 25th minute after ripping one past North Texas goalkeeper Courtney Burnette for her first goal of the season. Burnette was the busiest player on the field all game long as she did well to keep the score at 1-0 through halftime and was credited for 15 saves on the day, a new season high across UWS play. But the Aces found the back of the net three times in the second half to secure the three points. Mariana Diaz scored in the 58th minute and Colombian International Gisela Arrieta rounded out the scoring with tallies in the 70th and 87th minute. Anna Hughes made fives saves in net for the Aces and posted her second clean sheet of the season, as Houston have now outscored their opponents 13-0 over their first two matches of the season.

ASA EL PASO 5, FC AUSTIN ELITE 4

EL PASO, TX – It was a wild scoring affair in West Texas on Saturday evening as ASA El Paso welcomed in FC Austin Elite for their first home match of the season. In a match that never saw the pace settled down from start to finish, it was Desiree Morgas who stole the show for the hosts. The University of the Southwest product netted a hat trick on the night to lead her side, with Texas A&M International University’s Nicole Cohen assisting on a pair of goals in addition to scoring her own tally in the 24th minute. Also getting in on the scoring fun was Jaquiline Juarez, who found the back of the net in the 68th minute off Dalia Lopez’s corner kick. Both of FC Austin Elite’s goal scorers from last week’s victory over North Texas scored in this week’s contest as Christina Arteaga bagged a pair of goals and Kimberlin Palacios scored in the 79th minute. Marley Zochert also got on the scoresheet for the visitors but it wasn’t enough to turn the nine-goal match in their favor. After dropping a pair of results in Week IV action, it was a needed win for ASA to get themselves going while FCA would be happy about scoring the four goals, conceding five after posting a clean sheet last week will be something the side will work on before Week VI play begins.

SUNDAY, JUNE 10

NORTH TEXAS IMAGE 5, HAR FC 0

DUNCANVILLE, TX – Despite falling 4-0 to Houston on Saturday, North Texas responded beautifully on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over HAR FC to pick up their first points of the season. Former SMU Mustang striker Mackenzie Scovill finished off Natalya Ramirez’s ball in the 7th minute to giver team an early advantage, which was doubled 12 minutes later on Valiree Morris’ tally. The hosts 2-0 lead was quickly increased to 3-0 after halftime as Scovill turned from scorer to provider where she found substitute Tameir Grosvenor and the Texas Wesleyan University product did the rest, putting the game out of reach. Second half substitute Margaret Muniz extended the lead to 4-0 in the 72nd minute where she outfoxed HAR FC goalkeeper Cailey Croson and scored her first of the season before the Image wrapped up the scoring in the 83rd minute by benefitting from a HAR FC own goal. After posting a 15-save performance the day before, Courtney Burnette had a much easier five-save afternoon en route to her first clean sheet of the season while Croson stopped six in the losing effort.
