CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 2, COLORADO PRIDE 2

CALGARY, AB – Calgary Foothills WFC came into the weekend with a perfect record of three wins from three matches and welcomed the Colorado Pride, a team they defeated 3-0 last weekend. Things got off to a good start for the hosts as right on the stroke of halftime, Lauren Raimondo scored her team-leading third goal of the season with a left-footed curler, giving CRWFC a lead going into the second half. Undeterred after giving up the opening goal, the visiting Pride came out of the gates fast in the second half. A 51st minute strike from Sara Spaulding leveled the score after pick-pocketing a defender and lobbing Calgary’s goalkeeper Emily Burns. 17-year-old Mya Jones gave Calgary a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute, finishing off a great build-up sequence by her team inside the box and it looked from there that the hosts were on their way to their fourth successive victory. However, Colorado scored the leveler just 12 minutes from full time as Athena Kuehn’s goal meant the teams would share the points. It’s a great result for Colorado as AJ Adcock’s side hadn’t picked up a point since their season opening draw on May 18 against So Cal Crush and gave the team momentum heading into their second match of the weekend against Real Salt Lake Women on Sunday.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9

SANTA CLARITA BLUE HEAT 4, SO CAL CRUSH FC 0

SANTA CLARITA, CA – The Santa Clarita Blue Heat made short work of their local rivals with a 4-0 victory over So Cal Crush FC. It only took eight minutes for the Blue Heat number 8, Kassandra Massey, to pick up her first goal of the night as she finished off Jacey Pederson’s service. Cynthia Sanchez doubled Santa Clarita’s lead in the 32nd minute with her first goal of the season, with that 2-0 scoreline holding up to halftime. Massey picked up the UWS Offensive Player of the Week nod for Week IV action and she proved worthy of potentially winning that accolade again as she bagged her second goal of the night in the 62nd minute. Bulgarian National Team striker Evdokia Popadinova finished off the scoring in the 78th minute for her first tally of the season. Lauren Brzykcy and Gabriella Haw combined for the Blue Heat’s clean sheet while So Cal’s Ruth-Maria Soto made six saves in the losing effort.

SUNDAY, JUNE 10

CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 3, LA GALAXY OC WOMEN 1

CALGARY, AB – After a disappointing draw against Colorado on Friday evening, Troye Flannery’s team were looking to come out firing against LA Galaxy OC Women. And in the 19th minute, the hosts took the lead as former England Youth International Jessica Jones worked a nice give and go outside the box and slotted it past LAGOC goalkeeper Sarah Davis. The visitors responded in the 31st minute as after some excellent build up work, Noel Baham picked up her second goal in as many matches as she volleyed home Nicole Molen’s cross for the equalizer. Calgary didn’t need long to get back in front as Mya Jones was able to slip past a couple defenders in the 35th minute and rip home a shot that was too hot to handle for Davis. After holding onto the 2-1 lead through halftime, Calgary was able to ice the game off in the 51st minute as Jones was able to latch onto a long clearance from goalkeeper Emily Jones, cut back onto her right foot in transition and bent a long shot that landed just inside the far post for a wonderful strike. That goal was enough to seal the deal as Calgary maintained their first place spot in the West Conference standings with 13 points (4-0-1).  

REAL SALT LAKE WOMEN 4, COLORADO PRIDE 1

HERRIMAN, UT – Real Salt Lake Women were looking to get back in the win column after losing their last two contests to Calgary and LAGOC by a combined score of 7-0. But back on their home field at the Zions Bank Real Academy, the hosts wasted little time as striker Haley North picked up her third goal of the season in the 8th minute. That advantage was doubled less than two minutes later on a Pride own goal. The Pride came out of the locker room fired up as they wanted to capitalize on being the first team to take points off Calgary this year earlier in the week and got their reward right after halftime. Sara Spaulding scored her second goal of the weekend by netting one in the 47th minute, trimming her sides’ deficit to 2-1. However, that was the closest the Pride got to taking point as RSLW scored twice inside the final 25 minutes. Ella Johnson picked up her first goal of the year in the 69th minute and Tori Smith rounded out the scoring in the 77th minute. Winona Frishette only needed to make one save on the evening, en route to picking up the win in goal while Colorado’s Kaylyn Smith made a pair of saves in the losing effort.
