Southwest Conference Saturday doubleheader to take place in Houston

Saturday, June 16

HAR FC vs. North Texas Image

4:30 PM CDT – Houston Sports Park (Houston, TX)

HAR FC and North Texas Image met this past Sunday during Week V play and it was the Image who came away with a 5-0 victory. After spending the majority of the 90 minutes playing defense against the Houston Aces the day before, North Texas came out of the gates strong in their match against HAR FC, receiving goals from four different players and getting out to a quick 2-0 lead inside of 20 minutes played. It was a needed result for Joe Soliz’s team as his side was shut out over the first 180 minutes of their season. And now with some confidence behind the squad, they will look to make the trip down to Houston to score a second result against HAR FC.

That loss for HAR FC was certainly a step back for them after their season opening victory over ASA El Paso. The team only mustered six shots last week and hardly tested NTX’s Courtney Burnette in goal. Now back on their home field, they will need to get back to what worked from their opening match, which was creating chances for their two standout strikers, Sabrina Munguia and Stephanie Garcia. Those two were responsible for scoring all three goals against ASA El Paso, with Garcia assisting on both on Munguia’s tallies. It’s still early on to determine the best formula for success with HAR FC, but if there was any early indicator, it’s best that the team goes through those two strikers.

Houston Aces vs. FC Austin Elite

7:00 PM CDT – Houston Sports Park (Houston, TX)

Life is pretty good right now if you are the Houston Aces. They have scored 13 goals across two matches while conceded none and hardly have experienced any defensive trouble in either contest. They are getting goals from a number of different candidates and have quickly established themselves as the side to beat in the Southwest Conference, troubling their opponents with their fast offensive tempo and lock down defense. Now they are back on their home turf as part of Saturday’s UWS doubleheader at the Houston Sports Park and will look to make it three wins in three games before traveling to El Paso next week.

It doesn’t look like scoring goals will be a problem for FC Austin Elite this season, as they’ve posted six goals in two games this season. But ASA El Paso exposed their defense last week by scoring five goals in a wild game in West Texas. That’s the last thing that Head Coach Jamie Meshew would have wanted to see before facing a powerful offensive unit that the Aces have so there's no doubt that this week's training was primarily focused on battening the hatches defensively. She will be happy however with how forward Christina Arteaga has started off this season for FCA as the Abilene Christian product leads the team with three goals, scoring a pair last week against North Texas. If Arteaga can stay hungry for goals and can keep the game in reach, it is possible for FCA to walk out of Houston with a result this weekend.
