GRFC post six-point weekend, LAN hammer eight past Indy

FRIDAY, JUNE 15

FORT WAYNE GRYPHONS 0, GRAND RAPIDS FC 5

FORT WAYNE, IN – After a bye week in Week V, Grand Rapids showed no ring-rust as they cruised past Fort Wayne for a 5-0 victory on Friday night. The defending UWS champions got goals from five different players in their first of two matches on the weekend. The visitors got on the score sheet early from 2018 season debutant Kelli Doyle and never looked back from there, as the team also picked up first half tallies goals from Marti Corby and Cindy Lay. Maia Perez did make four saves in goal to pick up the clean sheet but it was GRFC who dictated the tempo throughout the full 90 minutes. Week IV UWS Team of the Week member Grace Labadie found the back of the net in the second half, extending her goal-scoring streak to four straight games, while Jodian Morris, who netted goals in both victories over Detroit earlier this season, ended her mini-scoring drought by putting on the final touches later in the half in finishing off her third goal of the season. Lorah Pund stopped seven shots despite taking the loss in net for the Gryphons.

LANSING UNITED 8, INDY PREMIER SC 0

EAST LANSING, MI – If Lansing United needed to make any more statements to prove to the rest of the Midwest Conference that they are contenders for the conference crown, Friday night’s eight-goal outburst against Fort Wayne checked that box. Jason Crist’s team has now bagged 21 goals on the season, giving them an average of three and a half goals scored per contest. And the effort against Indy Premier was spearheaded by a hat trick from Aubrey Schierbeek, as she scored in the 24th, 26th and 48th minute. Alexis Mitchell got the hosts off to a fast start with a long-distance strike that Indy goalkeeper Alexandra Reibel could not keep out despite getting a hand to it. Lansing upped their lead to 4-0 with three goals scored between the 23rd and 26th minute, with Mitchell scoring her second of the night and Schierbeek scored the other two, the first being a right footed effort from just outside the area and the second came off a set up from Week V UWS Offensive Player of the Week Lexi Pelafas. Riko Sagara scored Lansing's fifth goal of the first half by rocketing a shot off the underside of the bar from well outside the 18-yard box, picking up her first goal of the season. Schierbeek finished off her hat trick in the 48th minute while Morgan Marshall and Erin Doster both found the net inside the final half hour. Grace Kraft started the match for Lansing in net but came out after a half hour for Zoie Reed, who stopped one shot to preserve the dual clean sheet.

SUNDAY, JUNE 17

FORT WAYNE GRYPHONS 1, DETROIT SUN FC 5

FORT WAYNE, IN – Fort Wayne hosted their second straight top-three team in the Midwest Conference standings as Detroit made the trip out to Warrior Field at Indiana Tech University. Not wanting to mirror Friday’s contest in which the Gryphons found themselves behind early, they jumped out of the gates quickly against Detroit and netted an early goal. US U-15 Girls National Team member Amelia White gave her side a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute as she finished off Carly Mirwaldt’s service. But that lead for Fort Wayne lasted all of 10 minutes as Dani Evans netted her second goal of the season in the 15th minute. Week V UWS Team of the Week honoree Abby Allen put Detroit ahead in the 20th minute by scoring her second goal of 2018, after positing a pair of assists in last weeks’ win over Genesee. The Sun got their third goal right before halftime by way of a Brianne Rogers’ 44th minute strike and never looked back from there. Maya Piper and Elaina Eckert added second half tallies for the visitors, both being set up by Annie Walker, to secure the three points. The win keeps Detroit right on the heels of Lansing and Grand Rapids as only two points separate the top-three teams in the Midwest.

INDY PREMIER SC 2, GRAND RAPIDS FC 3

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – On a very warm Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, Grand Rapids were looking to wrap up their weekend road trip with another victory as they took on Indy Premier. And things got off to a good start for the defending UWS Champions as Alex Ruffer gave the visitors a lead in the 21st minute with a low strike after cutting in from the left side. GRFC were able to carry that 1-0 lead into halftime but it was the hosts who leveled things in short order after the second half whistle. Noelle Jester connected with Katie Soderstrom inside the area and Soderstrom was able to touch it home past Grand Rapids goalkeeper Maia Perez in the 46th minute. It was Jester who then gave the home side a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute as she coolly tucked home a short cross from Chandra Davidson. With this being the second match in three days, GRFC were starting to fatigue towards the end but found it within themselves to come back in dramatic fashion and pick up three points. Samantha Maher’s header tied the contest with 12 minutes left to go in normal time and Cindy Lay was able to put herself on the scoresheet for the second straight game by finishing off Grace Labadie’s cross inside the area for the winner. Indy Premier, despite the loss, put in a great effort over the 90 minutes and felt like they could have come away with points. But it was the perseverance of James Gilpins’ squad that afforded them the weekend sweep, keeping them at the top of the table.
