CFWFC, SAC each net key victories before Week VII encounter

FRIDAY, JUNE 15

CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 2, REAL SALT LAKE WOMEN 1

CALGARY, AB – Calgary continued their unbeaten run through the 2018 UWS season by defeating a very game Real Salt Lake Women’s side 2-1 on Friday night in Alberta. All the scoring came inside the first 20 minutes of play as after a touch-and-go first ten minutes, the hosts struck for the opener. Grace Stordy set off on a run down the right flank in the 12th minute and drilled in a low cross towards the goalmouth, where Lauren Raimondo swept it past RSLW’s Carly Nelson in goal for her fourth goal of the season. Four minutes later, CFWFC struck again as Rehana Murani ran down Christabel Oduro’s long ball over the top and half-volleyed the effort home. However, Real Salt Lake would strike right back in the 23rd minute by way of a Brecken Mozingo tally but could not find an equalizing goal in the remaining hour-plus, giving the hosts all three points. Emily Burns didn’t see much action throughout the 90 minutes, posting just one save on the night but picked up her second consecutive victory. Carly Nelson took the loss in goal for RSLW despite making five saves.

SATURDAY, JUNE 16

COLORADO PRIDE 0, LA GALAXY OC WOMEN 4

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Scott Juniper’s side trekked out to Colorado searching for three points before embarking on a very busy two-week stretch. The visitors did not waste any time getting on the board as Jordan Marada slotted home a 9th minute penalty to give LA Galaxy OC Women a lead. The former USC Trojan doubled the lead just four minutes later as she finished one off from close range and the visitors never looked back from there. Angela Hix made it 3-0 to LAGOC in the 29th minute and right before halftime, Sherifa Sumaila scored her second of the season by cleaning up a 44th minute rebound in front of goal. Hillary Beal was solid in goal for the visitors as she posted a six-save shutout, which was the second of the season for the Galaxy. It’s an important three points for Scott Juniper’s team as next week, they face off against Santa Clarita and Real Salt Lake before playing a home-and-home series against So Cal Crush in Week VIII.

SUNDAY, JUNE 17

SO CAL CRUSH FC 0, SANTA CLARITA BLUE HEAT 2

LA CRESCENTA, CA – Santa Clarita wrapped up the double against their local rivals, So Cal Crush FC, by taking a 2-0 decision on Sunday after defeating the same side 4-0 at home last week. Credit Kurtis Millan’s side this week as they made life for Santa Clarita much harder in the rematch, especially being buoyed by the fact that his team was playing at home for the first time this season. And for 80 minutes, his team stayed right with the 2016 UWS Champions. But Chloe Castaneda had other ideas about having the match remain goalless from start to finish. The UCLA Bruin midfielder was able to control a sharp pass right on top of the 18-yard box before putting the ball on her left foot and ripping home her second goal of the season. And then the Blue Heat picked up an insurance goal in the spectacular fashion through Nickolette Driesse in stoppage time. As the Blue Heat were trying to see out the remaining minutes, the former Penn State star smothered a bouncing ball in the midfield and hammered home an effort from over 30-yards out. That maintains the Blue Heat’s unbeaten mark (3-0-2) at the midway point of their schedule but face a challenging slate in Week VII as they take on LA Galaxy OC Women on Friday, June 22 before welcoming in West Conference leaders Calgary Foothills Women’s FC on Sunday in a match that could possibly determine the Conference champion.
