FCA surge to a two-win weekend, HOU overpower ASA

FRIDAY, JUNE 22

FC AUSTIN ELITE 2, HAR FC 1

ROUND ROCK, TX – FC Austin Elite were hoping to stop a two-match losing streak and get their weekend off to a good start against HAR FC. FCA’s team-leading goal scorer Christina Arteaga netted her fourth goal of the season in the 16th minute to give the hosts an early advantage. That lead was doubled just six minutes after the halftime whistle when Carina Baltrip-Reyes scored her first goal of the season, giving her team some needed insurance. After being held scoreless for five-straight halves, HAR FC ended that streak when Sabrina Munguia trimmed the teams’ deficit to one in the 53rd minute, giving Munguia now three goals on the season. But it wasn’t enough, as FC Austin Elite didn’t allow any more looks for their opponents towards goal. Cailey Croson took the loss for HAR FC in goal despite making seven saves while the duo of Katrina Buck and Paige Wallace combined to earn the victory, with Buck making the only save of the night.

SATURDAY, JUNE 23

ASA EL PASO 1, HOUSTON ACES 8

EL PASO, TX – The Houston Aces took to the road in Week VII and continued to fill the back of the net with goals as they scored four goals in each half to defeat ASA El Paso 8-1. Gisela Arrieta became the third different Aces player to score a hat trick this season as she netted goals in the fourth, 16th and 38th minute to put the game out of reach, giving her now seven goals on the season. Week VI UWS Offensive Player of the Week Julie Gavorski came on as a second half sub and after scoring a hat trick last week against FC Austin Elite, she scored goals in the 76th and 80th minute, the latter being from the penalty spot, to up her season total to seven as well. Paige Hayward and Tatiana Ariza also got their name of the scoresheet as well for the Aces. But for the first time in 2018, somebody broke through the Aces’ defense and found the back of the net and ASA El Paso’s Lauren Marenco was slipped in on a counter attack and beat Houston’s goalkeeper Michelle Rich, tallying her first goal of the season. But the night belonged the Aces as they will play a two-match weekend next week with the possibility of clinching the Southwest Conference title.

SUNDAY, JUNE 24

NORTH TEXAS IMAGE 0, FC AUSTIN ELITE 2

DUNCANVILLE, TX – After defeating North Texas 2-0 at home in their season opener, FC Austin Elite swept the season series by taking three points on the road against the Image on Sunday. The first half belonged to FCA's Jayme Woodfill as she struck for the opening goal in the 28th minute, latching onto Emily Jorgens' ball for her first goal of the season. Less than five minutes after that, Jorgens earned her team a penalty kick via a handball in the box and Woodfill confidently struck it home past NTX's Courtney Burnette. That was all the offense that FC Austin Elite needed as they were able to see out the remaining hour of the match to pick up their second win of the weekend. And as she did in the first match against North Texas, Paige Wallace posted a clean sheet, stopping six shots in the winning effort. Burnette took the loss despite making eight saves on the night. The win boosts FCA into second place in the Southwest and will host Houston in Week VIII, with a chance of keeping their postseason hopes very much alive if they can grab a positive result.
