LAN, DET play out a thriller, IPSC net crucial victory

FRIDAY, JUNE 22

INDY PREMIER SC 4, GENESEE FC 3

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Often you don’t associate the sport of soccer that involves a lot of scoring runs. In basketball, teams often score eight, ten, twelve points in a row and can swing momentum in their favor. Volleyball can see a team win four or five straight points off of a serve and probably that would be the difference. Friday’s match between Indy Premier and Genesee was not only a see-saw battle with multiple lead changes, but involved three, multi-goal scoring streaks. Ultimately it was a stoppage time winner from Allison Jorden that gave IPSC a 4-3 victory and kept them in the Midwest Conference playoff race. The hosts raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first half as Mykayla Brown opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute and Danielle Hayden extended the lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute. But Genesee would respond with a pair of goals, one each from Ashlyn Skidmore and Rachel Rasins, inside the final ten minutes of the first half to send the teams into the locker room level pegging. Genesee FC came into the match still looking for their first win in the season and saw their hopes of earning their first victory of 2018 increase right after halftime with Eleanor Christon’s go-ahead tally in the 48th minute. But buoyed by their strong showing in a 3-2 loss to defending UWS Champions Grand Rapids FC Women last week, IPSC mustered one final comeback. Chadra Davidson finished off Jorden’s service for the equalizer in the 67th minute before Jorden scored the dramatic winner to send the home fans into delirium. With results going in their favor elsewhere, the win puts Indy Premier only five points outside of a playoff position with four matches to go.

MICHIGAN LEGENDS 1, LANSING UNITED 1

BRIGHTON, MI – After posting a convincing 9-1 victory over Fort Wayne in early Week VII action, the Michigan Legends looked to try and grab their second win of the week as they hosted Lansing. In the two teams' previous meeting back on June 10th, it was Lansing who came away with a 2-1 victory and a second win over the Legends on Friday night would have all but secured their spot in the Midwest Conference postseason tournament. But the momentum of Michigan's Tuesday night's victory was carried over into the early stages of Friday's match as they took the lead in the 13th minute by way of Claire Cahalan's tally. Both teams generated plenty of chances throughout the 90 minutes as Michigan's goalkeeper Isabel Nino posted ten saves, her second highest total of the season, while Lansing's Grace Kraft stopped seven shots. But while Nino was on her game, she wasn't able to preserve the clean sheet as in the closing moments of the match, Lansing's Riko Sagara notched her fifth assist of the season by providing the helper on Olivia Trombley's 90th minute equalizer, which secured a point for the visitors.

SUNDAY, JUNE 24

LANSING UNITED 4, DETROIT SUN FC 4

EAST LANSING, MI – It was an eight-goal, see-saw affair between a pair of top-four team in the Midwest Conference on a rainy afternoon in East Lansing on Sunday but the points were shared between Lansing United and Detroit Sun with a 4-4 draw. The hosts got out to a lead in the 14th minute as Riko Sagara netted her second goal of the season on a well-struck penalty. But, as it would happen frequently in this contest, that lead was erased six minutes later as Rachel Deluca latched onto Tori Singstock’s low cross and finished off her first of the game. Lansing took the lead back in the 37th minute when Madison Costner got to the end line and drilled in a beautiful cross, allowing Ann Stinson to one-time her effort home. That lead increased to 3-1 four minutes later when three-time UWS Team of the Week member Aubrey Schierbeek ripped a dipping shot from well outside the area that gave Detroit goalkeeper Madison Clem fits and found its way into the net. But after the halftime interval, it was Detroit who came out firing as Justine Lynn belted a right-footed effort in the 49th minute that whizzed past Lansing’s Grace Kraft in goal to trim their deficit to 3-2. Deluca tied things in the 75th minute by latching onto a poor back pass and rounded the goalie before tucking home her second goal of the game. And the Detroit Mercy product finished off her hat trick in the 81st minute by slotting home a penalty, giving her side a 4-3 lead. But for the second time on the weekend, Lansing were able to score a dramatic late equalizer to keep their unbeaten record intact. Off of a looped service into the box, Clem failed to hang onto a loose ball and Week V UWS Offensive Player of the Week Lexi Pelafas tucked it home for her fifth goal of the season. That secured her team a point and vaulted Lansing United to the top of the West Conference table with two matches remaining.
