WNY conquer Massachusetts road trip, Inferno secure key victory

SATURDAY, JUNE 23

INFERNO RUSH 1, NEW JERSEY COPA FC 0

MILLERSVILLE, PA – It’s always a very tense and competitive match whenever Inferno Rush and New Jersey Copa FC square off and this past Saturday was no different. The Rush utilized a 77th minute goal from Tesa McKibben along with a strong effort from the back line to earn all three points, vaulting them into fifth place at the halfway mark of their season. Neither side created many key chances in the first half nor in the early stages of the second half. But it was the visiting NJCFC that nearly went ahead in the 72nd minute when second half substitute Mallensy Vargas struck the crossbar, only to see it bounce out and Alexis Williams put the rebound wide. Five minutes later, off of a clearance inside their own penalty area, Inferno strung together a nice sequence of passes that eventually saw McKibben put the ball on her right foot and finished off her third goal of the season. NJCFC pushed in the remaining minutes to find an equalizing goal, but Kelly O’Brien stayed strong in goal to earn her second clean sheet of the season. Courtney Brennan stopped five in goal in the losing effort for New Jersey.

WORCESTER SMILES 2, WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH 6

WORCESTER, MA – Back on June 1st, Lansing United’s Anna Stinson set a new mark in UWS history for the quickest goal scored from the opening kickoff, as she needed only 18 seconds to score against Indy Premier. Stinson’s record survived just three weeks as after the opening whistle on Saturday night, Jamie Boyar scored Western New York’s opening tally in just 13 seconds. That was the first of her three goals on the night to lead the Flash to a convincing 6-2 victory over the Worcester Smiles. The Flash have been known to get off to flying starts through their first four games of the season, scoring three goals of their ten goals within the first 15 minutes. On Saturday, they equaled that mark as after Boyar scored the opener, Tess Ford struck in the 6th minute and Erica Hubert made it 3-0 in the 10th. Maddie Pezzino scored her first goal of the season in the 20th minute and Boyar extended the lead to 5-0 in the 22nd minute. Dara Spital got Worcester on the board at the half-hour mark before Boyar completed her first-half hat trick in the 41st minute, finishing off Carissima Cutrona’s service. Talia Borci added a second goal for the Smiles in the 51st minute but didn’t alter what was a dominant start to the Flash’s weekend in the Bay State.

SUNDAY, JUNE 24

NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 0, WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH 1

AGAWAM, MA – After making the hour-plus drive from Worcester to Agawam after Saturday night’s game, Western New York bookended their weekend in Massachusetts by coming away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the New England Mutiny. It was grind it out type match for both sides, on what turned out to be a less-than ideal day conditions wise in the Springfield area. But the Mutiny created a couple of good looks in the first half, including a pair for key striker Kate Howarth, but none of her efforts directed at goal found the back of the net. As rain started to come down in the second half, the Flash continued to frustrate the Mutiny attacking unit with a high defensive line, limiting their chances to far and few between. But in the 85th minute, the Flash took the lead when a long ball from Erica Hubert found Carissima Cutrona down the right flank and she deftly lobbed Mutiny goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx for her fourth goal of the season, and ultimately the match winner. The six-point weekend moved Western New York from seventh place up to second place in the East Conference standings and sets up a Week VIII encounter with local rival Rochester Lancers, with the number one spot in the standings at stake. Meanwhile, the Mutiny remain on the outside looking in of the top-two in the East with 11 points and will have a tough stretch to finish out the season as they travel to Long Island and New Jersey in the next two weeks before hosting Connecticut to finish out the season.
