LAGOC sweep So Cal to climb to second, CFWFC draw with SAC in rematch

FRIDAY, JUNE 29

LA GALAXY OC WOMEN 4, SO CAL CRUSH FC 0

IRVINE, CA – It was a confident and convincing evening for LA Galaxy OC Women as they ran right through their local rival, So Cal Crush, with a 4-0 victory on Friday evening. The hosts jumped out to an early lead as off of a short corner routine in the fourth minute, Sherifa Sumaila’s service to the back post was headed across the box by Angelina Hix to a wide open Tiffany McCarty, who stuffed home her first goal of the campaign. LAGOC continued to pressure the So Cal defense and the score could have been a lot more inflated early on if it wasn’t for some brilliant work in goal by Kaycee Gunion. But eventually the Galaxy extended their lead to 2-0 as in the 18th minute, McCarty was able to shield off a defender inside the area and slot it to Hix, who pounced on the chance to net her second goal of the season. The lead grew to 3-0 in the 32nd minute as Hix set up Sumaila at the top of the box, who then powered her right footed effort past Gunion for her third point of the game. LAGOC struck again off of a corner kick in the 35th minute as Kiana Palacios rose well to meet Sabrina Flores’ ball at the back post and powered home a header. That would be all the offense that LAGOC would need on the night as they went into cruise control from that point on, securing three points and temporarily jumping Santa Clarita into second place.

SATURDAY, JUNE 30

CALGARY FOOTHILLS WOMEN’S FC 2, SANTA CLARITA BLUE HEAT 2

CALGARY, AB – After Santa Clarita defeated Calgary 3-0 at home in Week VII, the two teams met for the second straight weekend, this time at the Calgary Soccer Center, a place where CFWFC have performed very well all season long. In the first match, Calgary had difficulty trying to break down a strong Santa Clarita midfield but there weren’t nearly as many issues in the return match as there was better flow to the hosts’ possession. Calgary struck for the opening in the 22nd minute as off of Jessica Jones’ corner kick, Rehana Murani rose the highest and powered her header past Santa Clarita goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy for her third goal of the season. That 1-0 lead held through halftime but in the 62nd minute, the Blue Heat drew level with a wonderful strike from Julia Hernandez from outside the box. That goal did wonders for the Blue Heat players’ confidence as they knew that they needed three points from this match to keep themselves in the race for the West Conference crown. Wave after wave of attack kept building for the visitors and it finally paid off in the 88th minute as after a failed clearance from Calgary, Jacey Pederson found herself with space inside the area and tucked home the go-ahead tally. But for all that work that the Blue Heat put in during the second half to take the lead, Calgary only needed minutes to send their home fans into delirium. After earning a free kick right outside the area, Jones drilled her second inch-perfect delivery of the night as this time she found Tori Martyn, whose headed effort found the back of the net to tie the contest in the 90th minute. The teams shared the points on the night and while Calgary couldn’t distance themselves any further from their competition, they still control their destiny in trying to secure their first conference crown.

SUNDAY, JULY 1

SO CAL CRUSH FC 1, LA GALAXY OC WOMEN 4

LA CRESCENTA, CA – So Cal Crush and LA Galaxy OC Women wrapped up their weekend home-and-home series in La Crescenta on Sunday afternoon and LAGOC continued their scoring ways against their local rivals. Angelina Hix continued her strong scoring weekend against the Crush as she posted another brace to go with her two-goal, one assist performance on Friday night. Hix got the scoring started in the eighth minute when she pounced on a loose rebound when the Crush defense could not clear Sabrina Flores’ cross into the area. LA’s lead grew to 2-0 in the 27th minute when Tiffany McCarty scored her second goal of the series and the visitors never looked back from there. Hix scored her second of the day in the 67th minute when she combined again with Flores inside the area and Natalie Jacobs rounded out the scoring for LAGOC in the 82nd minute when she cashed in off of a rebound in the area. Lauren Wade scored the lone tally for So Cal in the 70th minute when she finished off Taylor Scott’s pass but it was not enough on the day to overcome LA’s many offensive weapons. The two wins on the weekend also set up the opportunity for the Galaxy to clinch the West Conference in Week IX when they welcome in Calgary to the Orange County Great Park.
