HOU clinch Southwest Conference Title with a two-win weekend

THURSDAY, JUNE 28

HOUSTON ACES 7, HAR FC 0

HOUSTON, TX – It was a confident start to the two-match weekend for the Houston Aces as for the fourth time this season, they hung seven or more goals against their opponent. The goalscoring started for the Aces in the 14th minute when Mariana Diaz Leal finished off Gisela Arrieta’s ball and the lead was quickly doubled three minutes later on Tatiana Ariza’s strike. Arrieta, who netted a hat trick in Houston’s win last week against El Paso, scored five minutes before halftime to give her team a three-goal lead at the interval. If there was ever any doubt at that point if the Aces would surrender the lead in the second half, it was quickly erased four minutes into the second stanza when Shauna Peare netted her first goal of the season. Melanie Barnes came in as a second half substitute and made an impact on the night, scoring a pair of goals in the second half while assisting on Peare’s tally. Julie Camp rounded out the scoring for the home side in the 72nd minute and confirmed that the Aces were only three points away from taking home the conference title.

SATURDAY, JUNE 30

FC AUSTIN ELITE 1, HOUSTON ACES 8

ROUND ROCK, TX – The Aces secured the Southwest Conference title with two matches to spare as they powered eight goals past FC Austin Elite on Saturday night. Gisela Arrieta scored the first of her four goals in the contest in the 14th minute and Natalia Ariza bagged goals in the 28th and 31st minute to give Houston a 3-0 lead going into halftime. Arrieta scored her second of the night in the 52nd minute but with just 16 minutes to go, Christina Arteaga, the leading striker for FC Austin Elite, got her team back into the match by firing home her fifth goal of the season. That was just the second goal that the Aces had given up in the season up to that point and they responded by scoring four more goals in the final 15 minutes, with two coming from Arrieta and one each from Ariza and Mariana Diaz Leal Arrellaga. As the Aces finish out the regular season, they will wait and see who else will join them in a few weeks at the UWS National Championship Weekend but after a performance like this, they will be going into that weekend as the favorites.

ASA EL PASO 0, NORTH TEXAS IMAGE 3

EL PASO, TX – The North Texas Image traveled out to West Texas on Saturday evening looking to right the ship after falling 2-0 last week to FC Austin Elite. What they got in return was a convincing 3-0 victory over ASA El Paso in a match where they controlled the tempo for the 90 minutes and didn’t allow too many opportunities to the hosts. Tiffany Obregon opened up her season goal scoring account in the 41st minute as she beat ASA goalkeeper Meagan Smith from distance. The Image doubled their lead right before halftime as Mackenzie Scovill netted her second goal of the season and gave her side a two-goal advantage right before halftime. It was a busy evening in goal for Smith as she was credited with 13 saves and was responsible for keeping her team within striking distance for the majority of the contest. North Texas added a third goal 12 minutes from full time via second half substitute Melinda Pina and solidified a solid performance for her team. The two sides will meet again in Week IX play with North Texas potentially seeking a second place finish in the Southwest Conference.
