GRFC, DET notch confidence boosting wins before Conference Tournament

FRIDAY, JULY 6

DETROIT SUN FC 6, FORT WAYNE GRYPHONS 0

PONTIAC, MI – After back-to-back draws, Detroit Sun FC got back to their winning ways with a comfortable 6-0 victory over Fort Wayne on Friday night. The win gave the Sun their fourth victory of the season within the confines of the Ultimate Indoor Soccer Arena and seventh in their two-year history of playing in UWS, after going 3-0-1 in 2017. Head Coach Skipper Mukhtar saw each of his teams’ six goals come from different players, now making it 14 players who have scored at least one goal this season for the Sun. Madison Pogarch kicked off the scoring with a second minute tally with Dani Evans scoring five minutes later for her third goal of the season. Fort Wayne goalkeeper Callie Rich was tested all evening long and was able to keep the Sun at bay for nearly the rest of the first half, coming up with key stops for the next half hour. But the quick-striking Detroit side netted three more goals in the final six minutes of the half as Brianne Rogers, Tori Singstock and Annie Walker each scored before the halftime whistle. Second half substitute Alicia Amante added a sixth in the 67th minute and that secured the Sun a third place finish in the Midwest Conference standings. Marina Manzo pitched a shutout for the Sun in goal by making four stops while Rich saved 13 shots for the Gryphons.

SATURDAY, JULY 7

INDY PREMIER SC 1, MICHIGAN LEGENDS 2

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Despite knowing that they were locked into fourth-place spot before taking the field on Saturday night, the Michigan Legends looked to put in a solid performance against Indy Premier before taking on Lansing United next Thursday in the Midwest Conference tournament semifinals. And they got out to a quick lead in the 8th minute as Jennifer Borawski netted her fifth goal in her last four matches, and sixth in total on the campaign. Sarah Trapp extended the Legends’ lead in the 19th minute and that was all the scoring that they would need to secure the three points. Despite not picking up any more insurance goals, they were able to possess the ball for long stretches of the game and keep Indy Premier on their heels. The hosts did score a consolation goal as second half substitute Izzy Wallace trimmed Indy’s deficit to one with a tally in second half stoppage time but the Legends held out for the result. Alexandra Reibel stopped seven in the losing effort for IPSC while Victoria Norris earned her first win of the season in goal for Michigan, saving three on the night.

SUNDAY, JULY 8

GRAND RAPIDS FC WOMEN 7, FORT WAYNE GRYPHONS 1

GRANDVILLE, MI – The defending UWS Champions are hitting their stride in the business portion of the season as they put seven past Fort Wayne in the Midwest Conference regular season finale on Sunday afternoon. Kylie Nylen gave the hosts the lead in the 17th minute by nodding home Grace Labadie’s corner and GRFC never looked back from there, tallying four more goals in the first half. Cindy Lay notched a natural hat trick by scoring in the 20th, 22nd and 23rd minute, including finishing off a pair of services from Bailey Kohorn. Not wanting to miss out on the goal scoring fun, Kohorn tallied a goal of her own right before the end of the first half as she latched onto Anya Pallas’ pass and ripped home the effort. After Fort Wayne pulled a goal back 20 minutes from full time, Michaela Kovacs finished off a corner kick in the 76th minute and netted her second of the game in the 84th minute, again off of a corner kick. Grand Rapids tallied 21 goals over their last two matches of the regular season and the last thing that the three other teams in the Midwest Conference Tournament wanted to see is GRFC firing with full confidence heading into next week. But finding the back of the net that often gives the defending champs the belief that they need to go and win the title again this year.
